Northwestern University Acceptance Rate Drops Again for Class of 2030

By Rona Aydin

Northwestern University continues to cement its reputation as one of the most selective universities in the United States. For the Class of 2029, Northwestern reported an acceptance rate of just 6.5%, admitting approximately 3,640 students from a record-setting pool of more than 56,000 applicants. As the Class of 2030 admissions cycle draws to a close, all signs point toward another decline in the university’s already razor-thin acceptance rate.

The trajectory has been striking. A decade ago, Northwestern admitted roughly 13% of applicants. That figure fell below 9% for the Class of 2027, dropped to 7.2% for the Class of 2028, and continued to 6.5% for the Class of 2029. With application volumes climbing each cycle and the university holding its incoming class size steady at approximately 2,100 enrolled freshmen, Northwestern has firmly joined the ranks of sub-7% acceptance rate institutions, placing it alongside Ivy League schools in terms of admissions competitiveness.

Northwestern’s admissions process is deeply holistic. The university evaluates applicants across academic achievement, standardized test scores, extracurricular depth, essays, letters of recommendation, and demonstrated interest in one of its undergraduate schools: the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, the McCormick School of Engineering, the School of Communication, the Medill School of Journalism, the Bienen School of Music, and the School of Education and Social Policy. Applicants must indicate their intended school on the application, and admissions expectations can vary meaningfully between them. Northwestern’s test-optional policy remains in effect, though the majority of admitted students continue to submit strong SAT or ACT scores.

Early Decision plays a significant role in Northwestern’s admissions strategy. In recent cycles, ED applicants have seen acceptance rates roughly two to three times higher than those in the Regular Decision round — a pattern consistent with other highly selective universities. For students who consider Northwestern their clear top choice, applying ED remains one of the most impactful strategic decisions in the process.

Northwestern’s location in Evanston, Illinois — minutes from downtown Chicago — gives students access to world-class internship and career opportunities in finance, consulting, media, technology, and the arts. The university’s alumni network is exceptionally active, and its quarter system allows students to explore a wider range of coursework than the traditional semester model. These advantages, combined with continued investment in financial aid, research, and interdisciplinary programs, have driven application growth year over year.
