What is the IB program, and how do colleges read it? The International Baccalaureate is a nonprofit curriculum with four programmes for students from age 3 to 19, and the IB Diploma is the version most US families meet in high school. This guide explains how the diploma works, how it is scored, how US colleges treat IB courses and exams, and when the full diploma is worth it.
What Are the Four IB Programmes?
| Programme | Ages | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Years Programme (PYP) | 3 to 12 | Inquiry-based curriculum for primary school |
| Middle Years Programme (MYP) | 11 to 16 | Framework for the middle and early high school years |
| Diploma Programme (DP) | 16 to 19 | Two-year pre-university program with external exams |
| Career-related Programme (CP) | 16 to 19 | Combines IB courses with career-related study |
As of August 2026, more than 9,100 IB programmes were offered across more than 6,200 schools in over 160 countries, reaching more than 1.95 million students (IB facts and figures). The United States has over 1,900 IB World Schools (IB in the United States), and 932 of them are authorized to offer the Diploma Programme (IB country page).
How Does the IB Diploma Programme Work?
Diploma students take six subjects: one each from language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences and mathematics, plus either an arts subject or a second subject from the sciences, individuals and societies or languages. Each student takes three or four subjects at Higher Level and the rest at Standard Level. Higher Level courses carry 240 recommended teaching hours and Standard Level courses 150 (IB Diploma curriculum).
Every diploma student also completes the core:
- Theory of Knowledge: a course on how knowledge is built and tested, assessed through an exhibition and a 1,600-word essay (IB).
- Extended Essay: an independent research paper of up to 4,000 words, externally assessed and graded A to E (IB).
- Creativity, Activity, Service: experiences and a project across the two years in creativity, activity and service; it is not formally assessed but must be completed for the diploma (IB).
How Is the IB Diploma Scored?
Each of the six subjects is graded from 1 to 7, and Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay together add up to 3 core points, so the highest possible score is 45 (IB passing criteria). A student earns the diploma with at least 24 points, provided all of these conditions hold:
- CAS requirements are met, and grades have been awarded in all subjects, Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay.
- No subject grade below 2, no more than two grade 2s, and no more than three grades of 3 or below.
- At least 12 points across Higher Level subjects and at least 9 across Standard Level subjects; a student taking four Higher Level subjects counts the three highest Higher Level grades and needs at least 5 points across the two Standard Level subjects.
- No grade of E in Theory of Knowledge or the Extended Essay, which the core matrix marks as a failing condition.
What Is the Average IB Score?
In the May 2025 session, 128,398 diploma candidates at 3,241 schools in 153 countries received results; the mean total was 30.6 points, the mean subject grade 4.9, and the pass rate 81.9% (IB final statistical bulletin, May 2025). For May 2026, the IB reported a global average Diploma Programme score of 30.88 points, and 209,607 students in all received Diploma Programme and Career-related Programme results (IB news release, July 2026); its provisional bulletin for the session reports a diploma pass rate of 82.6% and a mean subject grade of 4.9 (IB provisional statistical bulletin, May 2026). Since the May 2025 session, the IB statistical bulletin no longer reports how many students earn 45 points (IB).
How Do US Colleges Read IB Courses?
As equivalent signals of rigor. College Board itself says “AP and IB are both high-quality programs that colleges and universities consider when making admissions decisions” (College Board), and the University of Virginia states that it does not have a preference for one type of course (UVA Admission). Admissions officers read the transcript against what the high school offers, so a student at an IB school is judged on how much of the IB curriculum they took, just as a student at an AP school is judged on AP courses. Our comparison of AP vs IB covers when each is the stronger choice, and our guide to the IB Diploma and Ivy League admissions covers Higher Level strategy and predicted grades.
The University of California counts IB Higher Level courses as honors-level courses in its weighted GPA, along with AP and certain designated IB Standard Level courses for California residents; for nonresidents, UC grants honors weight only to AP or IB courses (UC GPA requirement). Our UC GPA calculator applies these rules.
Do Colleges Give Credit for IB Exams?
Many do, and Higher Level exams earn far more credit than Standard Level. Policies differ widely:
| University | IB credit policy |
|---|---|
| University of Michigan | Credit only for Higher Level exams; the minimum grade varies by subject, from 4 in subjects such as biology, chemistry, physics and most languages to 5 or higher in others; no credit for Standard Level (source) |
| UT Austin | IB Diploma holders may earn credit for Higher and Standard Level scores of 4 or higher and for Theory of Knowledge; Texas law requires public universities to grant at least 24 semester credit hours to diploma holders, with fewer allowed where an exam score is below 4 (source; Texas Education Code) |
| University of Florida | Credit for scores of 4 or higher on both Higher and Standard Level exams, within a 45-credit cap on all exam credit (source) |
| University of California | Standard Level exams earn no credit; at UC Davis, a Higher Level 5, 6 or 7 earns 8 quarter units, and a diploma score of 30 or more earns 6 quarter units (source) |
| Yale | A Higher Level 6 or 7 counts where an AP 4 or 5 earns acceleration credit, and a 7 where an AP 5 is required (source) |
| Princeton | A Higher Level 7 is treated like an AP 5 in most subjects, and a 6 like an AP 4, for placement (source); advanced standing ended with the Class of 2029 (source) |
| Oregon State | A diploma total of 30 or higher brings sophomore standing and a $3,000 renewable scholarship (source) |
| Towson University | IB Diploma holders receive 30 units and sophomore standing (source) |
Is the IB Diploma Worth It for College Admissions?
For a student at a school that offers it, the full diploma is the clearest way to show that they took the most demanding curriculum available, which is what selective colleges look for. The Extended Essay also gives a student a finished piece of independent research to discuss in essays and interviews. The trade-off is load: six subjects, three or four at Higher Level, plus the core, leave less room for a deep extracurricular commitment.
Oriel Admissions advises students at IB schools to choose Higher Level subjects that match their intended major, since a future engineer with Standard Level mathematics stands out for the wrong reason, and to plan the Extended Essay topic as part of the academic story the application will tell. For how colleges weigh course choices, see course rigor in college admissions, and for students applying from outside the US, how US colleges evaluate international transcripts.
