Yale says it welcomes a small group of transfer students each year and that they come from all backgrounds, including community colleges, first-generation families, and the military.
Who Is Eligible to Transfer to Yale?
To be eligible, an applicant must have completed at least two terms, or three quarters, of college-level enrollment and earned at least four transferable course credits. Yale says applicants normally have between eight and 18 transferable course credits when they apply. A Yale degree requires 36 course credits; transfer students may bring in up to the equivalent of 18 and must complete at least 18 at Yale, and they must enroll for at least two years, or four terms. Students with fewer than two terms or three quarters of college at the time of matriculation should apply as first-year students.
Grades matter for credit as well as admission. Transfer students must earn an A or B in at least three-quarters of their transferable courses, with no grade lower than C in the rest. Courses in subjects Yale does not offer, such as communications, criminal justice, business, nursing, and military fields, do not transfer, and college credit earned before high school graduation, including AP, IB, CLEP, and dual enrollment, does not transfer either. Students who plan to major in engineering should complete full sequences of college-level single-variable calculus and introductory physics before transferring.
What Does the Yale Transfer Application Require?
Applicants submit the Transfer Common Application with two letters of recommendation, official college and high school transcripts, the Common Application College Report, the Transfer Mid-term Report for students currently enrolled, and SAT or ACT results. The two letters must come from instructors who have taught the applicant in credit-bearing courses on a college campus; letters from research mentors or supervisors are supplemental and do not satisfy the requirement. The College Report is completed by a college official with access to the full academic and disciplinary record, such as a dean, adviser, or registrar.
Yale does not issue its own fee waivers, but applicants who meet the Transfer Common Application fee waiver criteria can apply for free, and veterans of the U.S. military and active duty service members are eligible for automatic fee waivers (Yale transfer requirements).
Does Yale Require the SAT or ACT for Transfer Applicants?
Yes. Yale requires first-year and transfer applicants to include scores from the ACT or SAT, and applicants may self-report them on the application. Yale says exams completed in March are generally available for consideration for transfer applicants, and the testing deadline for transfers is April 1. What Is the Eli Whitney Students Program?
The Eli Whitney Students Program is Yale’s route for nontraditional students: people without a bachelor’s degree who have been out of high school for at least five years. Eli Whitney students take the same in-person classes, have access to the same majors, and earn the same degrees as other Yale College students, and they may enroll full-time or part-time. Yale says nearly half of Eli Whitney students are veterans or active service members. Testing is optional for Eli Whitney applicants, there is no floor or ceiling on transferable credit, and most Eli Whitney students live off campus.
Some applicants qualify for both programs, but Yale does not allow a candidate to apply to both at the same time, and both use the Transfer Common Application. An applicant whose education was interrupted for five or more years should compare the two before choosing.
Do Yale Transfer Students Get Financial Aid?
Yes. Yale says its need-based financial aid policies are the same for transfer applicants and first-year applicants. For the transfer program, Yale meets 100 percent of financial need, with awards based on the full cost of attendance, and financial aid documents are due April 1.
