Princeton vs Yale: Admission Rates, Costs and Fit for Fall 2027

By Rona Aydin

Nassau Hall at Princeton University, the historic centerpiece of the Princeton campus
TL;DR: Princeton admitted 1,892 of 46,618 applicants to the Class of 2030, or 4.1%, by our calculation from its profile, and Yale states a 4.4% rate of admission for the same class, from 54,956 applicants. On these figures Princeton admitted a slightly smaller share, but the gap is small and Yale’s profile does not give a final admit count. Both offer single-choice early action with a November 1 deadline, which has passed for fall 2027 entry; regular decision applications are due January 1, 2027 at Princeton and January 2, 2027 at Yale. Yale requires the SAT or ACT for fall 2027, while Princeton is test optional for fall 2027 and will require scores from fall 2028. To weigh the two for a specific student, schedule a consultation with Oriel Admissions.

Is Princeton or Yale harder to get into?

On the latest figures, Princeton admitted a slightly smaller share of applicants. Princeton’s profile lists 1,892 admits from 46,618 applicants for the Class of 2030, as of August 18, 2026, or 4.1% by our calculation. Yale’s Class Profile, Fall 2026 states a “4.4% rate of admission” from 54,956 applicants. At decision time, Yale admitted 2,328 of 54,919 applicants, or 4.2% (Yale News, March 26, 2026).

The gap between 4.1% and 4.4% is small, and Yale’s profile states a rate without a final admit count, so in our view the two should be treated as equally selective. Both rates fell from the Class of 2029. Our guides to the Princeton acceptance rate and the Yale acceptance rate cover each in detail.

How does early action work at Princeton and Yale?

Both use single-choice early action: the plan is nonbinding, but an applicant may not apply early to most other private colleges at the same time. Yale calls its plan “Single-Choice Early Action Program (also called Restrictive Early Action)”, with a November 1 deadline and decisions in mid-December, and says that applicants denied in that round may not reapply in regular decision the same year (Yale timelines). Princeton’s single-choice early action deadline is also November 1, with decisions in mid-December (Princeton dates and deadlines).

Yale admitted 779 of 7,140 early action applicants to the Class of 2030, or 10.9% by our calculation, and deferred 18% of early applicants to the spring (Yale News, December 17, 2025). Princeton publishes no early counts. In our view, the early round suits a student with a clear first choice between the two, since an applicant can use it for only one of them.

What are the deadlines and testing rules for fall 2027?

Yale says “First-year and transfer applicants are required to include scores from the ACT or SAT,” and accepts superscored results (Yale standardized testing). A student applying to both for fall 2027 therefore needs a score for Yale even though Princeton does not require one this year.

How do costs and financial aid compare?

Tuition, 2026-27$68,140$72,500
Housing and food$22,120$21,600
Fees$314$185
Tuition, fees, housing and food$90,574$94,285
Income aid benchmarkAverage family contribution of $0 at $150,000 income (assets under $175,000)At least tuition covered below $200,000 (typical assets)
Sources: Princeton profile and Princeton cost and aid; Yale cost of attendance and Yale affordability. Totals by our calculation; Princeton gives $90,574 itself. Both colleges also estimate books, personal and travel costs.

Princeton says grants have replaced student loans in its aid packages since 2001, and its cost and aid page shows an average family contribution of $0 at $150,000 of income, $12,500 at $200,000 and $25,000 at $250,000, for U.S. families with assets under $175,000 and one child in college (Princeton cost and aid). Yale says “Families with annual incomes below $200,000 and typical assets qualify for a need-based scholarship that covers at least the cost of tuition,” and that a family’s ability to pay “is not a factor in the admissions process” for “any student, anywhere in the world” (Yale affordability). Yale’s aid meets full need “regardless of a student’s citizenship” without requiring loans (Yale financial aid). Neither offers merit scholarships: “There are no academic or athletic scholarships in the Ivy League” (Ivy League). In our view, a family should run both net price calculators before choosing between the two.

How do the residential colleges compare?

Yale assigns every student at random to “one of fourteen residential colleges, their new home away from home for the next four years” (Yale residential colleges). Princeton assigns first-year students at random to one of seven residential colleges (Butler, Forbes, Mathey, Huo College, Rockefeller, Whitman and Yeh College), each housing students from all four class years, and guarantees on-campus housing for all four years. After sophomore year, Princeton students may stay in a residential college or make other living arrangements while remaining affiliated with it (Princeton residential colleges). In our view, the residential college is a larger part of daily life for juniors and seniors at Yale than at Princeton.

How do the academic programs differ?

In our view, the clearest structural difference is the senior thesis. Princeton says “every senior writes a thesis or, in the case of some engineering departments, undertakes a substantial independent project” (Princeton senior thesis). Yale also requires a senior requirement in every major, and says “Most senior requirements take the form of a written or oral examination or a senior project or senior essay” (Yale senior requirement), so the form varies by major at Yale while Princeton expects a thesis or substantial project from every senior. In our experience, students who want an intensive independent research project at the center of senior year find Princeton’s requirement a strong reason to choose it. In our view, course offerings in a specific major matter more than general reputation, so a student should compare the two departments in the intended field directly.

How should a student choose between Princeton and Yale?

The view of Oriel Admissions is that the admission odds and the costs are close enough that neither should decide the choice. In our view, the deciding factors are the intended field, the senior thesis, the residential college system and the setting, with Princeton in a small New Jersey town and Yale in the city of New Haven. For a student applying to both for fall 2027, the practical point is that Yale requires a test score this year; for fall 2028 applicants, the early round can go to only one of them. Our guides to how to get into Yale and to Ivy League acceptance rates cover the wider picture.
