Georgetown Transfer: Acceptance Rate, Deadline, and How to Apply

By Rona Aydin

Georgetown interview: Healy Hall, Georgetown University

TL;DR: The Georgetown transfer acceptance rate was about 11 percent for fall 2025: 2,878 applied, 319 were admitted, and 190 enrolled, according to the Georgetown Common Data Set 2025-26 (Oriel Admissions calculation). That makes Georgetown one of the more attainable transfer targets in the elite tier. The rules are distinctive: applicants apply to one of six undergraduate schools through the Georgetown Application rather than the Common App, a cumulative B+ average or higher is recommended, the SAT or ACT is required for applicants who finished high school within the past five years, and Georgetown runs two rounds, a Spring 2027 round due November 1, 2026 and a Fall 2027 round due March 1, 2027. To decide whether Georgetown belongs at the top of your transfer list and build the file that clears it, schedule a consultation with Oriel Admissions.

About 11 percent for fall 2025, and that number deserves context, because it makes Georgetown a different kind of decision than its peers. Georgetown fills a genuinely large transfer class: 319 admits and 190 enrollees from 2,878 applicants in fall 2025. Georgetown states that it admits transfer students from community colleges, four-year institutions, and international universities, and that a cumulative B+ average or higher is recommended for transfer consideration. Read that floor correctly: B+ gets your file read, not admitted, and the successful profile runs well above it. For where a school like this belongs in a realistic transfer portfolio, see our guide to transferring between colleges.

Who is eligible, and when can you enter?

The window is wide. You qualify with as little as one full-time semester of at least twelve transferable credits, and remain eligible through four full-time semesters, meaning students can transfer in as sophomores or juniors, from a community college, a four-year university, or an international institution. Two boundary rules matter: high school students in dual enrollment programs must apply as first-years, not transfers, and students who already hold a bachelor’s degree are not eligible for Georgetown undergraduate degree programs. The calendar is the unusual feature. Georgetown is offering a separate Spring 2027 round, for entry in January 2027, open to current first- and second-year students and due November 1, 2026, and the Fall 2027 application lets applicants indicate interest in both fall and spring entry, with fall reviewed first. Georgetown notes that spring admission through that process is generally reserved for rising sophomores, because every transfer must complete four full-time semesters at Georgetown. Fall admits who want a head start may begin studies during the summer term.

How does the Georgetown transfer application work?

Georgetown runs its own application, the Georgetown Application, and the mechanics reward starting early. After you submit Part 1, you receive an email with a link to the Georgetown Transfer Application Supplement, which holds additional background questions plus short answer and essay questions; both are due November 1 for Spring 2027 entry or March 1 for Fall 2027 entry. The document load is heavy: official transcripts from every college attended, a list of courses planned for terms not on the current transcript, a Dean’s Report from your current institution, a Professor’s Report, preferably from a professor in your intended major area, and a Secondary School Report with your high school transcript. The SAT or ACT is required, as an official score report from at least one full sitting with no superscoring, unless you graduated from high school five or more years before entry. Georgetown cannot guarantee alumni interviews for every transfer applicant but assigns as many as it can, and an assigned interview is expected to be completed; transfer interviews run in March and April, and none are offered in the Spring 2027 round. Rising juniors applying to the A.B. in Public Policy or the B.S. in Environment and Sustainability, which combine study on the Hilltop and Capitol campuses, have a January 15, 2027 priority deadline.

What is the committee looking for?

Georgetown’s guidance to transfer applicants is more concrete than most: no specific courses are required, but most competitive candidates demonstrate strength in college coursework closely aligned to both the Georgetown Core and the requirements of their intended school and major. You apply directly to one of six undergraduate schools and must select a major, a few majors (American Studies, Business and Global Affairs, and International Business, Language, and Culture) are closed to transfers, and the committee reads your transcript against the curriculum you would actually enter, so Oriel Admissions treats a semester of well-chosen courses as application strategy in itself. Beyond the transcript, the pattern rewarded is trajectory: performance in college that exceeds your high school record, evidence you have engaged your current campus rather than waited it out, and a transfer rationale anchored in what a specific Georgetown school offers. Applicants to humanities and social science majors in the College of Arts and Sciences can also indicate interest in the Capitol Applied Learning Labs (CALL) program, whose admits spend their first semester at the Capitol Campus; doing so does not lessen chances for the traditional pathway. Transfer credit is evaluated after admission by the dean’s office of your school, with a maximum of 60 transferable credits.

How can a student build a competitive Georgetown transfer case?

Sequence the year backward from March 1. Fall semester: choose courses that mirror the Georgetown Core and your target school’s requirements, and build the relationship with the professor who will write your Professor’s Report: a specific letter from someone who knows your work beats a warm one from someone who does not. In December and January, draft the essays in the Supplement around a school-specific rationale, applying the same standard of named programs and honest fit we use for the Georgetown supplemental essays. In February, submit well before March 1 so the file is complete for the March and April interview window, then treat any alumni conversation as the same evaluative opportunity it is for first-years. The underlying profile Georgetown rewards is the one described in a Georgetown candidacy, matured by a college transcript, and if your first-year cycle ended on the Georgetown waitlist, the transfer route is a real second chance.

What GPA do you need to transfer to Georgetown?

Georgetown recommends a cumulative B+ average or higher for transfer consideration. Treat that as the floor for a serious read: competitive admits typically present strong grades in rigorous coursework aligned to their intended school.

When is the Georgetown transfer deadline?

March 1, 2027 for Fall 2027 entry, and November 1, 2026 for the separate Spring 2027 round. Rising juniors applying to Public Policy or Environment and Sustainability have a January 15, 2027 priority deadline.

Does Georgetown accept spring transfer students?

Yes. Georgetown is offering a separate transfer round for January 2027 entry, open to current first- and second-year students and due November 1, 2026. The Fall 2027 application also lets applicants indicate interest in Spring 2028 entry, which is generally reserved for rising sophomores.

Does Georgetown use the Common App for transfer?

No. The only way to apply as a transfer is the Georgetown Application: after you submit Part 1, you receive an email link to the Transfer Application Supplement, which holds additional questions plus short answer and essay questions.

Is the SAT or ACT required for Georgetown transfer applicants?

Yes, unless you graduated from high school five or more years before entry. Georgetown requires an official score report from at least one full SAT or ACT and does not accept superscores, and scores accompany official college transcripts, a report from your dean, a report from a professor, and a Secondary School Report.

Do Georgetown transfer applicants get interviews?

Georgetown cannot guarantee interviews for all transfer applicants but assigns as many as possible, and an assigned interview is expected to be completed. Transfer interviews take place in March and April, and none are offered in the Spring 2027 round.

Can community college students transfer to Georgetown?

Yes. Georgetown explicitly admits transfer students from community colleges as well as four-year institutions, with the same B+ recommendation, credit rules, and application process.
