Clemson Honors College: Deadlines, Decisions, and How to Get In

TL;DR: Yes, Clemson has an honors college: the Clemson University Honors College, known until a June 2020 trustee vote as the Calhoun Honors College, enrolls approximately 400 new first-year students each year. Its application is separate from the Clemson application and runs in three rounds for fall 2027: Priority (application October 22, materials November 1, decisions mid-January), General (application January 8, materials January 15, decisions early March), and Late (April 1, decisions on a rolling basis after May 1) (Clemson University Honors College). Honors decisions are released only to students who already hold a Clemson admission decision, and only Priority applicants are eligible for the National Scholars Program and the Breakthrough Scholars Program. The Honors Class of 2030 posted a median 4.0 unweighted GPA, a median 1430 SAT, and a top 2 percent class rank. To position an application, schedule a consultation with Oriel Admissions.

Does Clemson Have an Honors College, and What Happened to the Calhoun Name?

Yes, and the naming confusion is real. For decades the institution was the Calhoun Honors College; in June 2020 Clemson’s Board of Trustees approved removing the Calhoun name, and it operates today as the Clemson University Honors College, so older guides, counselor lists, and forum threads that use the former name point to the same place (NBC News, June 2020). The college says it combines the strengths of a public, land-grant university with those of a highly selective small college (About the Clemson University Honors College), and it enrolls approximately 400 new first-year students a year from any major (Honors Incoming Class). Its home base is the Honors Center, open to Honors students 24 hours a day, with the Great Hall, honors classrooms, study spaces and an honors library, and a student kitchen, and members get courses designed only for Honors students, free printing, and free tickets to cultural events (Honors Center). Honors members can apply to live in the Honors Residential College in Cribb and DesChamps Halls, which has Faculty in Residence (Honors Residential College).

When Is the Clemson Honors College Application Due?

The Clemson Honors College application is separate from, and in addition to, the Clemson undergraduate application, and it becomes available in the Clemson admissions portal within 24 hours of submitting the university application; applicants who use the Common App between August 1 and August 15 get access on August 15 (Clemson Honors first-year admissions). For fall 2027 it runs in three rounds. Priority: the Clemson Early Action application is due October 15, the Honors Priority application October 22, and Honors materials November 1, with Priority decisions in mid-January. General: the Clemson Regular Decision application is due January 1, the Honors General application January 8, and Honors materials January 15, with decisions in early March. Late: April 1, with decisions on a rolling basis after May 1, reviewed only as space allows. Priority matters for money as well as timing, because only applicants who meet all Priority deadlines are eligible for the National Scholars Program and the Breakthrough Scholars Program, and a Priority application left incomplete, including missing recommendation letters, moves to the General round. The application itself has two required essays of up to 650 words each, one of them the applicant’s Common App essay, an optional essay on special circumstances, up to seven activities, up to five awards, two letters of recommendation (Clemson strongly suggests both be academic), and the STARS academic record. The Honors Class of 2030 had a median unweighted GPA of 4.0, a median SAT of 1430, and a top 2 percent class rank, and 31 percent ranked first or second in their class (Honors Incoming Class).

When Do Clemson Honors Decisions Come Out?

Here is the answer to the most-searched Clemson honors question, and it is a rule rather than a date: honors decisions are released only to students who have received an admission decision from Clemson Undergraduate Admissions. A Priority-round honors applicant who does not receive an Early Action decision from the university does not receive an honors decision until the General release in early March, no matter how early the honors file was complete (Clemson Honors first-year admissions). In practice that couples the honors calendar to the Clemson Early Action calendar: apply Early Action by October 15, complete the Priority honors application by October 22 and its materials by November 1, and the honors decision follows the admission. Two administrative details are worth knowing in advance: admitted students reply to the honors offer through an Honors admission decision reply form in the Clemson portal, which also leads to Honors housing information once the enrollment deposit is paid (Honors Residential College), and denied applicants can appeal through a link in the same portal, with a February 16 deadline for the first appeal round and March 23 for the second.

Can Current Clemson Students Join the Honors College?

Yes. Missing honors as a senior costs a year, not the option. The Clemson Honors College accepts applications from enrolled Clemson students in both fall and spring, with one bright-line requirement: a cumulative Clemson GPA of 3.40 or higher by the end of the semester of application (Clemson Honors, enrolled students). For spring 2027 entry the application opened September 1 and closed October 8, and for fall 2027 entry it is tentatively set to open February 1 and close March 1. Students choose a track: General Honors, which broadens intellectual range and is usually completed in the first two years, or Departmental Honors, an advanced study, project, or thesis within the major, usually completed in the junior and senior years. The application asks for proposed honors courses, an activities section, one essay, and a resume, and it opens with the same login used for the original Clemson application. For a strong first-year who missed the entering cohort, Oriel Admissions treats a deliberate first semester aimed at the 3.40 line as the whole strategy.

Is the Clemson Honors College Worth It?

Oriel Admissions keeps the same honest ledger here as across this cluster. The honors admission pages list no automatic scholarship for every member, although Priority applicants are eligible for the National Scholars Program and the Breakthrough Scholars Program, and the return is paid in structure: honors-only courses and seminars, dedicated advising, Honors College and research grants, a 24-hour Honors Center, and a residential community with Faculty in Residence. For South Carolina families the in-state math closes the question on its own. For out-of-state families, compare Clemson’s nonresident cost of attendance with the alternatives; our Schreyer Honors College guide and Frederick Honors College guide show how two other public honors colleges structure admission and benefits. The limit is familiar: brand-sorted fields sort by brand, and Clemson honors strengthens a Clemson degree rather than replacing a private one. Families pricing structure against merit dollars should run the comparison through our merit aid finder and the financial aid strategy guide for upper-middle-class families.

There is no published cutoff. The Honors Class of 2030 had a median unweighted GPA of 4.0, a median SAT of 1430, and a top 2 percent class rank, with 31 percent ranked first or second in their class, and in the experience of Oriel Admissions the essays carry real weight beyond the numbers.
