Frederick Honors College at Pitt: Admission, the BPhil, and Whether It Is Worth It

By Rona Aydin

Cathedral of Learning, University of Pittsburgh

TL;DR: The David C. Frederick Honors College at the University of Pittsburgh enrolls approximately 700 new first-year students into its Honors Degree program each fall. Students apply through the regular Pitt application, the December 1 priority deadline is the one that matters, and decisions arrive after general Pitt acceptance and no later than March 1; there are no minimums, but the average student has a 1450 to 1500 SAT or a 34 ACT and a 3.80 unweighted GPA (Frederick Honors College). The college sits on floors 34 through 37 of the Cathedral of Learning, serves roughly 15 percent of Pitt students, and offers three paths: the Honors Distinction, the jointly conferred Honors Degree, and the Bachelor of Philosophy, a research degree defended before a committee that includes an external examiner (Pitt Magazine, October 2026). For families running the flagship-honors math, Pitt is the open-access version of the play. To position an application, schedule a consultation with Oriel Admissions.

What Is the Frederick Honors College?

Pitt’s honors college is approaching its 40th anniversary, and its dean describes it as one of the oldest honors colleges in the country (Pitt Magazine, October 8, 2026). It was renamed the David C. Frederick Honors College in July 2022, when Pitt announced a multimillion-dollar gift from David C. Frederick, a 1983 graduate who was Pitt’s first Rhodes Scholar and an appellate lawyer who has argued more than 100 appeals, including dozens that reached the U.S. Supreme Court; Pitt expects the gift to create a permanent endowment valued at more than $65 million, funding study abroad, internship and research stipends, and mentorship programs (Pittwire, July 6, 2022). The college occupies floors 34 through 37 of the Cathedral of Learning, and its dean, Nicola Foote, has said it serves roughly 15 percent of Pitt’s student body, with students from every undergraduate major. All Pitt students can take honors courses and participate in honors programs, member or not (Frederick Honors College, Honors Degree). Students admitted as first-years receive admission into the Honors Degree program, a transcript notation as soon as they are admitted, priority course registration beginning with their first spring term, a personal Frederick Honors College advisor, and priority access to the first-year Honors housing community, although Honors housing placement is not guaranteed (Frederick Honors College, first-year admissions).

What Are the Three Frederick Honors College Credentials?

CredentialWhat It Requires
Honors DistinctionA recognition path that any Pitt student with a GPA of 3.0 or higher can declare
Honors Degree18 credits of Frederick Honors College-approved courses, 6 experiential credits (research, independent study, study abroad, internships, co-ops), the Honors Outside the Classroom Curriculum, and a GPA of 3.250 or higher; jointly awarded by the Frederick Honors College and the student’s home school
Bachelor of Philosophy (BPhil)An independent research thesis under a faculty mentor, defended before a committee that includes an external examiner; the BPhil replaces the standard BA or BS and is jointly awarded

The Bachelor of Philosophy deserves its own sentence. Pitt says the BPhil is offered at only a few universities worldwide, and it expects candidates to have a research experience similar to that of a graduate student and to produce a thesis of graduate-thesis caliber, defended before a committee of scholars that includes an external examiner (Frederick Honors College, BPhil). Students apply for BPhil candidacy on a rolling basis once a faculty member agrees to serve as thesis advisor, and before beginning their last semester at Pitt. For a student aiming at doctoral study, medicine, or a research career, the BPhil is a credential that graduate admissions readers can evaluate directly.

How Do You Apply to the Frederick Honors College, and When Do Decisions Come Out?

The mechanics run inside the Pitt application: first-year students apply as part of their regular application to Pitt and indicate interest in the Frederick Honors College (Frederick Honors College, Honors Degree). Applicants who indicate interest and submit all required materials by December 1 receive priority consideration; those who apply later may still be considered, based on the availability of remaining openings, and they are notified only if admitted. Priority applicants hear at any time after general acceptance to Pitt, and no later than March 1 (Frederick Honors College, first-year admissions). Review weighs the weighted GPA, the rigor and strength of the high school curriculum, SAT or ACT scores if applicable, class rank if applicable, extracurricular activities, and the quality of the Common Application essay or Pitt personal statement. The college publishes no minimums but does publish averages: a 1450 to 1500 SAT and/or a 34 ACT, with a 3.80 unweighted GPA, feeding an entering Honors Degree class of approximately 700.

Can You Join Pitt Honors Without First-Year Admission?

Yes, in several ways, and Oriel Admissions considers this the most strategically underrated fact in Pitt admissions. All Pitt students can participate in honors courses and programs, so a student who misses the first-year admit loses the notation and the advisor, not the classroom. The Honors Distinction can be declared by any student with a GPA of 3.0 or higher (Pitt Magazine, October 8, 2026). Upper-division students, including transfers from Pitt’s regional campuses, can apply to the Honors Degree program with at least a 3.500 GPA and at least two semesters (24 credits), one essay, and a letter of recommendation from an instructor or academic advisor, and transfer students apply through the regular Pitt application with an additional essay question (Frederick Honors College, Honors Degree). That prove-then-join architecture gives Pitt an unusually wide second chance; compare the mechanics in our Schreyer Honors College guide and LSA Honors Program guide.

Is the Frederick Honors College Worth It?

Run the ledger honestly. The Frederick Honors College first-year admissions page lists no scholarship among the benefits of admission, so the return is structural: the Cathedral of Learning home, priority registration, a personal advisor, priority access to Honors housing, funding for research and experiential learning, and above all the BPhil, a credential that behaves like a research degree in graduate admissions. For Pennsylvania families the in-state math is decisive on its own; for out-of-state families, an honors structure inside a large research university delivers much of what private brochures promise, so compare the full cost of attendance against the alternatives. Oriel Admissions notes the same honest limit as everywhere in this cluster: brand-sorted fields still sort by brand. Families weighing the structure-versus-dollars question across programs should read our merit aid finder and the broader financial aid strategy guide for upper-middle-class families; Pitt’s answer is structure, offered more widely than most.
