Harvard MBA Acceptance Rate: What HBS Actually Publishes for the Class of 2027

By Rona Aydin

Widener Library at Harvard University, illustrating Harvard legacy admissions

TL;DR: Harvard Business School does not publish an official Harvard MBA acceptance rate. What HBS publishes is a class profile, and the Class of 2027 numbers are these: 943 students enrolled from 9,409 applications, a 10.0% enrollment ratio, with a median GMAT of 730 (classic) or 685 (Focus), median GRE scores of 164 Verbal and 164 Quantitative, and an average GPA of 3.76. Because HBS converts a very high share of its offers, the true admit rate sits only modestly above the enrollment ratio. For the 2026-2027 cycle, Round 1 closes September 9, 2026 and Round 2 closes January 5, 2027; there is no Round 3 (Sources: Harvard Business School Class of 2027 profile and application portal). If you are deciding whether your profile clears the HBS bar and which round to target, Oriel Admissions builds MBA application strategy on exactly this data: schedule a consultation.

What Is the Harvard MBA Acceptance Rate?

There is no official Harvard MBA acceptance rate, and any precise percentage you see online is a third party estimate of a number the school never states. Searches for the Harvard Business School acceptance rate and the Harvard MBA acceptance rate chase the same unpublished number. What HBS does publish, every fall, is the composition of its entering class, including application volume and enrolled headcount. From those two official figures you can compute the hardest number available: the enrollment ratio, the share of applicants who ended up in a seat. For the Class of 2027 that ratio is 10.0%, and it has sat near ten percent for both of the last two published cycles.

Entering ClassApplicationsEnrolledEnrollment Ratio
Class of 20279,40994310.0%
Class of 20269,8569309.4%

Source: official Harvard Business School class profiles. Enrollment ratio is enrolled students divided by applications and understates the true admit rate, since not every offer converts into a matriculant; HBS yield is among the highest of any MBA program, so the gap is smaller at Harvard than at most schools.

Two readings matter for your planning. First, the Class of 2027 is the largest HBS cohort since the Class of 2023, at 943 students, even as applications eased 4.5% from the prior cycle’s 9,856. A school growing its class against a softer pool is marginally friendlier arithmetic for you than the reverse. Second, the Harvard MBA acceptance rate question is really a yield question: because most admitted candidates say yes to HBS, the admit rate cannot sit far above the 10.0% enrollment ratio, which is why credible descriptions of Harvard MBA selectivity cluster in the low double digits rather than anywhere comfortable. For how HBS compares with the other six schools on the same official basis, see our full breakdown of MBA acceptance rates at the M7.

GMAT, GRE, and GPA: What the Class of 2027 Profile Shows

HBS states no minimum score for either test and no preference between them, and for the first time the class profile backs that with a striking fact: the GRE is now the most submitted test at Harvard Business School. Forty-four percent of the Class of 2027 submitted GRE scores, against 34% for the GMAT Focus edition and 28% for the classic GMAT, with some students submitting more than one test.

MetricHBS Class of 2027
Median GMAT (10th edition)730, middle 80% range 690 to 770
Median GMAT Focus685, middle 80% range 645 to 735
Median GRE164 Verbal, 164 Quantitative
Average undergraduate GPA3.76 (United States schools, 4.0 scale)
Test submission mix44% GRE, 34% GMAT Focus, 28% GMAT classic
Average work experience4.9 years

Source: official Harvard Business School Class of 2027 profile. HBS reports test medians rather than averages; GPA is a class average across United States institutions on a 4.0 scale.

Read the ranges before you panic about the medians. The middle 80% of classic GMAT scores runs from 690 to 770 and the Focus range from 645 to 735, which means one in ten enrolled students scored below the bottom of those ranges. A 700 classic or a 655 Focus does not end a candidacy at HBS; it moves the burden of proof onto your record, your recommendations, and the clarity of your story. If the test is still in front of you, pick one format, prepare it properly, and protect the quantitative section, an approach we detail in our GMAT prep strategies guide. Then make sure the rest of the file carries its share of the argument, per the core pillars of an MBA application.

Who Actually Enrolls at Harvard Business School

The 943 members of the Class of 2027 came from 283 undergraduate institutions and 62 countries. Women hold 44% of the seats. International students hold 37%, up two points in a cycle when several peer schools moved the other direction, and that divergence is worth weighing if you are applying from abroad: HBS grew its international share while Wharton’s fell to a ten year low of 26%. Ten percent of the class are first generation college graduates. By undergraduate field, engineering leads at 24%, followed by business and commerce at 22%, with economics and math or physical sciences at 19% each, social sciences at 11%, and arts and humanities at 5%. The average member of the class brought 4.9 years of full time work experience, and consulting was the most common pre-MBA industry at 19%. None of this is a checklist; it is a portrait of the competition, and your application’s job is to argue what you add to that room that it does not already have. Your resume is the first place that argument lands, and our MBA resume guide shows how committees actually read those pages.

Deadlines and Strategy for the 2026-2027 Cycle

Applying this cycle means applying to the MBA Class of 2029, which matriculates in fall 2027, and HBS runs exactly two rounds. Round 1 closes September 9, 2026 with decisions on December 10, 2026. Round 2 closes January 5, 2027 with decisions on March 25, 2027. Applications, including recommendations, are due at 12:00 PM Eastern on the deadline day, not at midnight, and an application arriving after the Round 1 cutoff simply rolls to Round 2, while one arriving after Round 2 is not reviewed. You may apply in one round per year. There is no Round 3, so the practical choice is binary: submit a finished file on September 9 or take the winter to make it genuinely stronger for January 5. A complete Round 2 application beats a rushed Round 1 one. If you are still in your final year of school, the 2+2 deferred track is the separate door built for you; its prior cycle closed on April 22, 2026 and the next 2+2 deadline had not been published as of late August 2026, so put the official page on your watch list and read our overview of deferred MBA programs in the meantime.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Harvard MBA Acceptance Rate

What is the Harvard MBA acceptance rate?

Harvard Business School does not publish an official acceptance rate. Its Class of 2027 profile reports 9,409 applications and 943 enrolled students, a 10.0% enrollment ratio, and because HBS converts a very high share of its offers into matriculants, the true admit rate sits only modestly above that figure. Treat any precise percentage you see elsewhere as an estimate of a number the school never states.

How many people apply to the Harvard MBA?

9,409 people applied for the HBS Class of 2027, down 4.5% from 9,856 the prior cycle, while the enrolled class grew from 930 to 943, the largest Harvard MBA cohort since the Class of 2023. Application volume near ten thousand for roughly 950 seats is the structural reality behind Harvard MBA selectivity.

What GMAT score do you need for Harvard Business School?

The Class of 2027 median is 730 on the classic GMAT and 685 on the GMAT Focus edition, with middle 80% ranges of 690 to 770 and 645 to 735. HBS states no minimum score. A score at or above the median removes testing as a question; a score inside the range but below the median shifts weight onto your work record, recommendations, and essays rather than ending the candidacy.

Does Harvard Business School prefer the GMAT or the GRE?

Neither, by policy and now by evidence. HBS states no preference between tests, and the GRE was the most submitted test in the Class of 2027 at 44%, ahead of the GMAT Focus at 34% and the classic GMAT at 28%. Median GRE scores were 164 Verbal and 164 Quantitative. Take the test on which you can post the stronger balanced score, and protect the quantitative section.

What GPA do you need for the Harvard MBA?

The Class of 2027 average is 3.76 on a 4.0 scale for United States institutions, the highest figure in the M7 alongside Stanford. Because the transcript is years behind you, committees read it as one signal among several: a lower GPA with a rigorous quantitative major, a strong test score, and analytical work since graduation reads very differently from the same number with none of those. The test score is the lever you still control.

When are the HBS application deadlines for 2026-2027?

Round 1 closes September 9, 2026 with decisions on December 10, 2026, and Round 2 closes January 5, 2027 with decisions on March 25, 2027. Applications are due at 12:00 PM Eastern on the deadline day, and there is no Round 3: a file arriving after the Round 2 cutoff is not reviewed. You may apply in one round per application year, so the choice is a finished September file or a stronger January one.

How much work experience do you need for Harvard Business School?

The Class of 2027 averages 4.9 years of full time work experience at matriculation, with consulting the most common pre-MBA industry at 19%. HBS sets no fixed requirement, and it weighs trajectory over tenure: two promotions in four years argues harder than seven flat years. Candidates far below the average are usually better served by the 2+2 deferred track or by waiting one more promotion cycle.

Does Harvard Business School have a deferred MBA program?

Yes. The HBS 2+2 program admits students in their final year of undergraduate or eligible graduate study, then has them work for two to four years before matriculating. The prior cycle’s 2+2 deadline was April 22, 2026, and the next cycle’s deadline had not been published as of late August 2026, so check the official HBS page before planning around a date. For a strong final year student, 2+2 is the single most favorable route into HBS.
