National Merit Scholarship: How It Works, What It Is Worth, and Which Colleges Sponsor It

TL;DR: The National Merit Scholarship is awarded through an annual academic competition run by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). About 1.3 million juniors enter each year by taking the PSAT/NMSQT, about 50,000 are recognized, more than 16,000 become Semifinalists, about 15,000 advance to Finalist, and roughly half of Finalists win one of three kinds of National Merit Scholarship. For the 2028 competition NMSC plans about 6,700 National Merit Scholarships plus about 620 corporate Special Scholarships, 7,320 awards worth more than $29 million in total; in the 2026 competition about 6,700 students won awards worth nearly $24 million. The National Merit $2500 Scholarship is a single payment, college-sponsored awards pay $500 to $2,000 a year, and corporate awards reach $10,000 a year. For families aiming at the most selective universities, the dollar value is modest; the real value lies in the credential and, at some sponsor universities, in separate institutional packages tied to Finalist standing. To discuss your strategy, schedule a consultation with Oriel Admissions.

What Is the National Merit Scholarship?

The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and college scholarships, conducted by NMSC, a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance. NMSC held its first competition in 1956. Students enter by taking the PSAT/NMSQT in the fall of junior year and meeting the program entry requirements; for the 2028 competition, that means the October 2026 test, and NMSC expects about 1.3 million of the more than 3 million test takers to qualify as entrants.

NMSC screens entrants with the Selection Index, calculated from the PSAT section scores, and recognizes about 50,000 high scorers. Roughly a third of them, more than 16,000, are named Semifinalists, the highest scorers in each state; the rest are Commended Students, who are honored but do not continue in the scholarship competition. Only Semifinalists can advance to Finalist standing, and only Finalists can win a National Merit Scholarship. Our guides to National Merit Semifinalist cutoffs and the PSAT score calculator explain the qualifying scores.

How Do Students Win a National Merit Scholarship?

The competition runs about 18 months, from the junior-year PSAT/NMSQT to scholarship offers in the spring of senior year. The figures below are the ones NMSC publishes for the 2028 competition, which current juniors entered with the October 2026 test.

Winners of National Merit $2500 Scholarships and corporate-sponsored awards are chosen by committees that read the student’s academic record, including course load, difficulty, and grades; the essay; demonstrated leadership and contributions to school and community; and the school official’s recommendation. The SAT or ACT score a Finalist submits confirms the PSAT performance but, according to NMSC, is not used in selecting award winners. College-sponsored winners are chosen by officials of the sponsor college from the information Finalists file as part of admission. Our guide to the National Merit Finalist requirements covers the steps between Semifinalist and Finalist.

What Types of National Merit Scholarships Are There?

NMSC offers three types of National Merit Scholarship to Finalists, plus Special Scholarships for high-performing participants who are not Finalists. No student can receive more than one monetary award from NMSC.

The National Merit $2500 Scholarships are allocated to each state with the same representational method used to name Semifinalists, and every Finalist is considered for one. NMSC funds most of them itself, with help from corporate sponsor grants and donations. Corporate-sponsored awards and $2500 Scholarships can be used at any regionally accredited U.S. college, while a college-sponsored award can be used only at the college paying for it.

How Much Is the National Merit Scholarship Worth?

Less than many families assume. The National Merit $2500 Scholarship is a single payment of $2,500. A college-sponsored award pays the same amount to every winner at a given college, set by that college between $500 and $2,000 a year, so it is worth $2,000 to $8,000 over four years. Corporate-sponsored awards vary the most, from one-time payments of $2,500 to renewable stipends of up to $10,000 a year. Across the 2026 competition, about 6,700 winners shared awards worth nearly $24 million, an average of a little over $3,500 per winner by Oriel Admissions calculation.

The larger numbers families hear about usually come from somewhere else. Several sponsor universities pair their NMSC award with separate institutional scholarships for National Merit Finalists. Those packages are set by each university, not by NMSC, and their terms change from year to year, so families should read each university’s current scholarship page rather than relying on past descriptions. Our guide to financial aid and merit scholarships for upper-middle-class families covers how those offers compare with need-based aid.

Which Colleges Sponsor National Merit Scholarships?

About 140 colleges and universities currently sponsor National Merit Scholarships, according to the Fall 2026 PSAT/NMSQT Student Guide, which lists each sponsor with the minimum number of awards NMSC expects it to offer each year. The largest sponsors are public universities, led by the University of Alabama, Texas A&M, and the University of Texas at Dallas.

Most of the country’s most selective universities do not sponsor awards. None of the Ivy League universities, Stanford, MIT, Duke, the University of Chicago, Northwestern, Johns Hopkins, Rice, or Caltech appear on the current sponsor list. A smaller group of highly selective colleges does sponsor them.

How Does the First-Choice College Rule Work?

A college-sponsored award depends on one administrative step that families often miss: the Finalist must tell NMSC that the sponsor college is the student’s first choice. For the Class of 2027 competition, NMSC’s instructions to Semifinalists set the dates. Finalists who report a sponsor college as first choice before March 1, 2027 are in the first group referred to that college; NMSC passes along later reports through May 31, 2027, the final deadline; and NMSC begins emailing college-sponsored offers on May 3, 2027.

The student must also have applied and been admitted, and must not already hold another National Merit Scholarship offer. Once a college-sponsored offer is posted, NMSC will not process a change of college, and the award is canceled if the student enrolls elsewhere. Finalists who are unsure can set their choice to undecided before May 3 to avoid receiving an offer from a college they may not attend. For students admitted early decision to a college that does not sponsor awards, the college-sponsored route is closed, but the National Merit $2500 Scholarship and corporate awards remain available because they can be used at any regionally accredited U.S. college.

Who Pays for National Merit Scholarships?

About 260 independent organizations and institutions sponsor nearly two-thirds of the awards offered each year, according to NMSC; NMSC funds the rest, including most of the $2500 Scholarships. About 120 corporations, company foundations, and businesses sponsor awards, most of them for children of their employees, and about 140 colleges sponsor awards for Finalists who will attend. Scholarship payments must be used for full-time undergraduate study at a regionally accredited U.S. college or university and are not payable for attendance at the service academies.

For many families the corporate list is the overlooked opportunity. The Student Guide lists every corporate sponsor with its eligibility rules, and many of them, such as ADP, Aon, and AstraZeneca, also offer Special Scholarships that require the family to file the sponsor’s Entry Form in the same school year as the qualifying test. A parent’s employer can therefore matter as much as a few Selection Index points, and the form is due during junior year, long before Finalist results.

Is a National Merit Scholarship Worth Pursuing for Elite College Applicants?

As money, rarely on its own: a single $2,500 payment or a few thousand dollars a year will not change the cost of a highly selective private university. As a credential, yes. Semifinalist and Finalist standing are national honors that appear in the Honors section of the Common App, and Finalist notification arrives in February, in time to update colleges during regular decision reading. The families who benefit most financially are those weighing sponsor universities with institutional packages for Finalists, and those whose employers sponsor corporate awards.

The practical plan is to aim the PSAT preparation at the state cutoff only when a student is within reach of it, to file any corporate Entry Form during junior year, and to keep the college list driven by fit rather than by a scholarship chase. Our guide to Commended Student status covers the recognition most high scorers receive.

Frequently Asked Questions About the National Merit Scholarship

How much is the National Merit Scholarship worth?

It depends on the award type. The National Merit $2500 Scholarship is a single payment of $2,500. College-sponsored awards pay $500 to $2,000 a year for up to four years, and corporate-sponsored awards range from one-time payments of $2,500 to renewable awards of up to $10,000 a year.

How many students win a National Merit Scholarship?

About 6,700 students win National Merit Scholarships each year, roughly half of the Finalists. NMSC also awards about 620 corporate Special Scholarships to high-performing students who are not Finalists.

Do Ivy League schools offer National Merit Scholarships?

None of the Ivy League universities appear on the current list of college sponsors, and neither do Stanford, MIT, or Duke. A Finalist attending one of them can still receive a National Merit $2500 Scholarship or a corporate-sponsored award, since those can be used at any regionally accredited U.S. college.

Can a student receive more than one National Merit Scholarship?

No. NMSC states that no student can receive more than one monetary award from NMSC, and a student who already holds an offer cannot be considered for a college-sponsored award.

When are National Merit Scholarship winners announced?

For the 2027 competition, NMSC begins offering corporate-sponsored awards on March 10, National Merit $2500 Scholarships on March 25, and college-sponsored awards on May 3, 2027. Names are released to the news media on April 21, May 12, June 2, and July 12.

What is a National Merit Special Scholarship?

It is a corporate-sponsored award for high-performing program participants who are not Finalists but meet criteria set by a corporate sponsor, usually as children of employees. Families must file the sponsor Entry Form in the same school year as the qualifying PSAT/NMSQT.

Does the National Merit Scholarship cover full tuition?

No NMSC award covers full tuition on its own. Some sponsor universities offer separate institutional scholarships to National Merit Finalists, but those are set by each university and their terms change over time.

What happens to a college-sponsored award if the student attends another college?

It is canceled. A college-sponsored National Merit Scholarship can be used only at the college that finances it, and NMSC will not process a change of college once a college-sponsored offer has been posted.
