PSAT Score Calculator: Total Score, Selection Index, and National Merit Cutoffs

Harvard Yard historic district - SAT vs PSAT strategy for elite admissions

TL;DR: This PSAT score calculator turns two section scores into a total score and an NMSC Selection Index, then compares the index with the final Class of 2027 National Merit Semifinalist cutoff for any state and with the national Commended level of 208. The arithmetic is fixed by College Board: the total is Reading and Writing plus Math, on a 320 to 1520 scale, and the Selection Index is two times Reading and Writing plus Math, divided by 10, on a 48 to 228 scale. Class of 2027 state cutoffs ranged from 208 to 223, with New Jersey and the District of Columbia highest. A calculator gives the number; what a family should do with it depends on how close the student sits to the state cutoff and on the SAT plan already in motion. To discuss your strategy, schedule a consultation with Oriel Admissions.

Choose the two section scores from the score report and the state or selection unit where the student attends high school. The PSAT score calculator updates as soon as a value changes. It compares the result with the Class of 2027 cutoffs, the most recent final figures, because the Class of 2028 cutoffs for the October 2026 test will not be set until September 2027.

How Is the PSAT Score Calculated?

The PSAT/NMSQT reports two section scores, Reading and Writing and Math, each on a 160 to 760 scale, and the total score is simply their sum, on a 320 to 1520 scale. There is no separate conversion from a count of correct answers. The test is multistage adaptive: each section has two modules, and the difficulty of the second module depends on performance in the first. College Board scores it with item response theory, so a section score depends on which questions a student answered correctly, how difficult those questions were, and the probability of guessing.

That design is why a PSAT score calculator has to start from section scores rather than from a raw score. Two students who answer the same number of questions correctly can earn different section scores if they saw different modules. The section scores on the official report, or in the BigFuture School app, are the inputs that matter; our guide to PSAT scores explains how to read them against national averages.

How Is the NMSC Selection Index Calculated?

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation does not use the total score. It screens entrants with the Selection Index: double the Reading and Writing section score, add the Math section score, and divide by 10. College Board gives the example of a student with 620 in Reading and Writing and 500 in Math, whose Selection Index is 174. Because Reading and Writing counts twice, two students with the same total can land on opposite sides of a cutoff.

Selection Index = (2 x Reading and Writing + Math) / 10. Formula and the 620/500 example: College Board, PSAT/NMSQT Understanding Scores for Students and Families, Fall 2026. Other examples calculated by Oriel Admissions.

What Selection Index Do You Need for National Merit?

National Merit sets two kinds of thresholds. The Commended level is a single national Selection Index: 208 for the Class of 2027, down from 210 for the Class of 2026. Semifinalist cutoffs are set state by state, because NMSC allocates Semifinalist places in proportion to each state share of the nation’s graduating seniors and then fills them with the highest Selection Index scores in that state. For the Class of 2027, the final state cutoffs ranged from 208 in Alaska, Montana, North Dakota, West Virginia, and Wyoming to 223 in New Jersey and the District of Columbia, according to Compass Education Group.

About 50,000 of the roughly 1.3 million program entrants receive recognition each year. NMSC program materials describe more than 16,000 of them as Semifinalists and about 34,000 as Commended Students. Our guide to National Merit Semifinalist cutoffs by state has the full Class of 2027 table, and our guide to the National Merit Commended level covers what that recognition means.

How Should Families Read the PSAT Score Calculator Result?

Treat last year’s cutoff as a reference, not a target. Every state cutoff fell between the Class of 2026 and the Class of 2027, by 1 to 7 points, according to Compass Education Group. A Selection Index one or two points above last year’s state figure is promising, not settled.

Use the score range. The PSAT report shows a score range for each section, reflecting how much the result would likely vary on another administration. Running the calculator at the top and bottom of those ranges shows how sensitive the Selection Index is.

Check eligibility first. Only the junior-year PSAT/NMSQT counts for students spending four years in high school, and an asterisk next to the Selection Index on the score report means the student did not meet entry requirements or that the score is for guidance purposes only. Our guide to when PSAT scores come out covers the fall 2026 release dates and the National Merit timeline that follows.

Use the right selection unit. Semifinalists are named by the state where the student attends high school. Students at U.S. boarding schools that enroll many out-of-state students compete in regional selection units, and U.S. citizens attending school abroad compete in their own unit.

How Can a Student Raise the Selection Index?

Reading and Writing carries twice the weight of Math in the index, so a student near a cutoff gains the most from targeted Reading and Writing work. In the 2025-26 school year only 3.9% of 11th graders who took the PSAT/NMSQT or PSAT 10 scored 700 or higher in Reading and Writing, according to College Board, which is why high Reading and Writing scores separate Semifinalists in the most competitive states. The Knowledge and Skills section of the score report shows which content domains to work on.

The same index follows the student to the SAT. For Finalist standing, NMSC calculates a Selection Index from SAT section scores using the highest scores from a single administration, so the preparation that lifts the PSAT index also serves the confirming SAT. Our guides to PSAT to SAT conversion and SAT and PSAT strategy explain how the two tests fit into one plan.

Frequently Asked Questions About the PSAT Score Calculator

How do you calculate a PSAT score?

Add the two section scores. Reading and Writing and Math are each reported from 160 to 760, so the total runs from 320 to 1520. A student with 680 in Reading and Writing and 700 in Math has a total score of 1380.

How do you calculate the National Merit Selection Index?

Double the Reading and Writing section score, add the Math section score, and divide by 10. A student with 700 in Reading and Writing and 680 in Math has a Selection Index of 208. The scale runs from 48 to 228.

Can you calculate a PSAT score from the number of questions answered correctly?

No. The digital PSAT/NMSQT is adaptive and scored with item response theory, so section scores depend on which questions were answered correctly and how difficult they were, not on a simple count. A calculator has to start from the section scores on the report.

What Selection Index is needed for Commended Student status?

The Commended level is set nationally each year. It was 208 for the Class of 2027 and 210 for the Class of 2026. Students at or above it but below their state Semifinalist cutoff are named Commended Students.

What Selection Index is needed to become a National Merit Semifinalist?

It depends on the state. For the Class of 2027, final cutoffs ranged from 208 in Alaska, Montana, North Dakota, West Virginia, and Wyoming to 223 in New Jersey and the District of Columbia.

Does this calculator predict the Class of 2028 cutoffs?

No. It compares a score with the final Class of 2027 cutoffs, the most recent available. Class of 2028 cutoffs, for juniors testing in October 2026, will not be known until September 2027, and every state cutoff moved between 2026 and 2027.

Is Reading and Writing more important than Math for National Merit?

For the Selection Index, yes. Reading and Writing is counted twice, so 10 more points in Reading and Writing raise the index by 2, while 10 more points in Math raise it by 1.

Does a sophomore Selection Index count for National Merit?

Not for students who plan four years of high school. They must take the PSAT/NMSQT again as juniors to enter the competition, so a sophomore index is best used as a baseline.
