When Do PSAT Scores Come Out? Fall 2026 Release Dates and What Comes Next

By Rona Aydin

TL;DR: When do PSAT scores come out in 2026? College Board releases fall PSAT/NMSQT scores to students on one of three dates, October 22, November 5, or November 12, 2026, depending on when the school submits student answers: by October 9, by October 23, or by October 30. The fall testing window runs October 1 to 30, 2026, scores typically post 2 to 4 weeks after testing, and schools see them in the K-12 reporting portal two days before students do. For juniors, the results that carry real weight come later: National Merit Semifinalists will be notified in early September 2027 and Commended Students in late September 2027. A PSAT score is a diagnostic first and a National Merit screen second, and the right response to it depends on grade, Selection Index, and the testing plan already in motion. To discuss your strategy, schedule a consultation with Oriel Admissions.

When Do PSAT Scores Come Out in Fall 2026?

College Board does not release PSAT/NMSQT scores on a single national day. Each school gives the test on a day it chooses inside the October 1 to 30, 2026 window, and the score date follows from when that school finishes submitting student answers. College Board publishes three release waves for fall 2026 in-school testing, and the same schedule applies to the PSAT 8/9 when a school gives it in the fall. The volume is large: 2,986,867 students took the PSAT/NMSQT during the 2025-26 school year, according to College Board’s 2026 annual report.

In practice, a school that tests early in October and submits promptly sees scores on October 22, while a school that tests at the end of the month lands on November 12. Across the three waves, the wait runs roughly 2 to 4 weeks after the test, which matches College Board’s general guidance that in-school scores are typically available online 2 to 4 weeks after the administration.

Why Does the PSAT Score Date Depend on the School?

Families asking “when do PSAT scores come out?” are really asking when their school submitted answers. The release date is tied to answer submission, not to the calendar day a student sat for the test. Students from the same school may test on different days within the window, although each student can obtain only one valid score per window, so classmates can end up in different release waves. The test runs in the Bluebook app, which keeps working through a brief loss of connection; if a device is still offline at the end of the test, the school has to make sure the answers are submitted once internet access returns.

That submission step is the one point where a delay can matter for a junior. According to the Fall 2026 PSAT/NMSQT Student Guide, if answers are not received by the end of the submission period, College Board may cancel the scores or report them for guidance purposes only, and a score reported for guidance purposes only is not considered in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Families who know a test day had technical trouble should confirm with the school counselor that every answer set went through.

Two other groups follow slightly different rules. Schools that give the PSAT/NMSQT as part of a state testing program should check with the state, which may set its own reporting timeline. Homeschooled students and students who test as Away Students at another school receive scores on the schedule of the school where they tested, and NMSC mails any National Merit recognition for homeschooled students to the address given during exam setup.

How Do Students Get Their PSAT Scores?

There are three ways to see PSAT/NMSQT results once the release date arrives, and they do not all show the same level of detail. The fastest is the BigFuture School mobile app, which is free for students age 13 and older who test in the United States. Students who enter a mobile number during exam setup receive a text with a link to the app, a sign-in code, and an alert when scores are ready; no password is required.

Students who skipped the mobile number can still sign in to BigFuture School with their test registration number, which appears on the sign-in ticket and the PDF score report, or which the school counselor can provide. Students under 13 see their full score report through the counselor. For families, the practical route is usually the PDF: the school receives an official score report for every PSAT/NMSQT test taker, and College Board expects students to review it with educators and share it at home.

What Will the PSAT Score Report Show?

The PSAT/NMSQT reports three scores plus the National Merit screening number. The total score is the sum of two section scores, and the NMSC Selection Index is calculated separately from the same two sections, with Reading and Writing counted twice. Our PSAT score calculator shows how a pair of section scores becomes a Selection Index.

ScoreRangeHow it is built
Total score320 to 1520Sum of the two section scores
Reading and Writing160 to 760Section score
Math160 to 760Section score
NMSC Selection Index48 to 228Two times Reading and Writing, plus Math, divided by 10 (PSAT/NMSQT only)

Around those numbers, the report adds a score range that shows how much the result would likely vary on another administration, an average score of all testers across the last three years, and an All Tester Percentile. That percentile is grade-specific: 11th graders are compared with 11th graders and 10th graders with 10th graders, drawn from the past three cohorts who took the PSAT/NMSQT anywhere in the world. A Knowledge and Skills section shows performance across eight content domains, four in each section, and the NMSC section shows the student’s answers to the program entry questions and whether the score will be considered for National Merit. Our guide to PSAT scores, averages, and what counts as good explains how to read the totals and percentiles against national data.

When Do PSAT 10 and PSAT 8/9 Scores Come Out?

Tests given during the spring in-school window, which runs March 1 to April 30, 2027, follow a separate four-wave schedule. Schools that give the PSAT 10 or the PSAT 8/9 in the spring land on one of these dates, again set by when the school submits answers rather than by test day.

Neither the PSAT 10 nor the PSAT 8/9 counts toward National Merit, so these releases are purely diagnostic. They are still useful: all tests in the SAT Suite share a common score scale, so a spring PSAT 10 result can be compared directly with a fall PSAT/NMSQT score to measure growth.

What Happens After PSAT Scores Come Out for National Merit?

For juniors in the Class of 2028, the October 2026 PSAT/NMSQT is the qualifying test for the 2028 National Merit Scholarship Program. NMSC expects more than 3 million students to take the test in 2026 and about 1.3 million of them to meet the entry requirements. Score release opens a competition that runs about 18 months, and the dates below come from the Fall 2026 PSAT/NMSQT Student Guide.

The Selection Index on the score report arrives with no verdict attached. NMSC does not announce the Commended level or any state Semifinalist cutoff when scores come out, so families have to read the number against the prior year. For the Class of 2027, the national Commended level was 208 and state Semifinalist cutoffs ranged from 208 to 223, with New Jersey and the District of Columbia highest at 223, according to Compass Education Group, which compiles the final cutoffs each September; our guide to National Merit Semifinalist cutoffs by state tracks those figures, and our guides to Commended Student status, the National Merit Finalist requirements, and the National Merit Scholarship cover the later stages. One rule catches families by surprise: sophomores who take the 2026 PSAT/NMSQT and plan four years of high school do not enter the 2028 program, and they must test again as juniors in October 2027.

What Should Families Do the Week PSAT Scores Come Out?

Check the NMSC section first. An asterisk next to the Selection Index means the student did not meet National Merit entry requirements based on the answers given before testing, or that the score is for guidance purposes only. Missing or incorrect entry answers can be corrected through NMSC’s online student update form, and all record updates for the 2028 program are due by October 15, 2027.

Place the Selection Index against last year’s state cutoff. Because Reading and Writing counts twice, two juniors with the same total can sit on opposite sides of a cutoff. A student within a few points of the prior year’s number should treat the result as uncertain rather than settled, since cutoffs move every year.

Read the Knowledge and Skills domains, not just the total. The eight domain bands show where points were lost, which is more useful for planning than the headline score.

Set the SAT plan. College Board designs the PSAT/NMSQT and the SAT on one scale, so a PSAT score is a reading of where a student stands on the SAT scale today; our guide to PSAT to SAT conversion explains how to turn it into a target. For juniors, that reading should feed directly into the junior year testing strategy and the choice among upcoming SAT and ACT test dates. Our comparison of SAT and PSAT strategy covers how the two tests should share one preparation arc.

For sophomores, treat the result as a baseline. A 10th grade PSAT/NMSQT score does not count for National Merit for most students, but it is the first clear signal of where test preparation should start, and it belongs in the broader sophomore year plan.

Frequently Asked Questions About When PSAT Scores Come Out

When do PSAT scores come out, and at what time of day?

Fall 2026 PSAT/NMSQT scores come out on October 22, November 5, or November 12, depending on when the school submits answers. College Board publishes these release dates but not a release time, and students who gave a mobile number during exam setup receive a text from the BigFuture School app when scores are ready.

How long after the PSAT do scores come out?

Scores are typically available 2 to 4 weeks after testing. For fall 2026 the exact date depends on when the school submits answers: by October 9 for an October 22 release, by October 23 for November 5, and by October 30 for November 12.

Why did a classmate get PSAT scores before my child?

Release depends on when answers are submitted, and students at the same school can test on different days within the October 1 to 30 window, so classmates can land in different release waves. The school counselor can confirm which wave applies.

Can parents see their child PSAT scores?

The school receives an official PDF score report for every PSAT/NMSQT test taker, and College Board expects students to share it with their families. Students age 13 and older can also open their scores in the BigFuture School app or a personal College Board account and show them at home.

What if my child never received the text with PSAT scores?

The BigFuture School app also accepts the test registration number, which is printed on the sign-in ticket and the PDF score report and is available from the school counselor. The school also holds the official PDF score report.

When will we know whether my junior qualified for National Merit?

For the October 2026 PSAT/NMSQT, NMSC notifies Semifinalists through their high schools in early September 2027 and Commended Students in late September 2027. Before that, in April 2027, NMSC asks principals to verify the eligibility of about 50,000 high scorers.

Does a sophomore PSAT score count for National Merit?

Not for students who plan to spend four years in high school. They must take the PSAT/NMSQT again as juniors in October 2027 to enter the competition for scholarships offered in 2029.

What does an asterisk next to the Selection Index mean?

It means the student did not meet National Merit entry requirements based on the answers given before testing, or that the score is reported for guidance purposes only. Entry answers can be corrected through the NMSC online student update form, and record updates for the 2028 program are due by October 15, 2027.
