How to Get Into Choate Rosemary Hall: Acceptance Rate, Fall 2027 Deadlines, Tuition and College Matriculation
By Rona Aydin

What is the Choate Rosemary Hall acceptance rate?
Choate does not publish an acceptance rate or the number of applicants it receives, and its admission FAQ says it does not set minimum academic requirements or publish average GPAs or standardized test scores (Choate Admission FAQ). Rates that circulate online come from directories and estimates, not from Choate. What Choate does publish is the size and makeup of the school, in its School Profile for 2026-2027 (Choate School Profile 2026-2027).
| Measure | Choate figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Total enrollment | 861 students | School Profile 2026-2027 |

| Grade 9 (Third Form) | 179 | School Profile 2026-2027 |
| Grade 10 (Fourth Form) | 209 | School Profile 2026-2027 |
| Grade 11 (Fifth Form) | 226 | School Profile 2026-2027 |
| Grade 12 (Sixth Form, Class of 2027) | 230 returning students plus 17 postgraduates (247) | School Profile 2026-2027 |
| Domestic students of color / international | About 40% / 18% | School Profile 2026-2027 |

Choate sits on a 458-acre campus in Wallingford, Connecticut (About Choate). Rosemary Hall was founded as a school for girls in 1890 by Mary Atwater Choate, and her husband, Judge William G. Choate, established The Choate School for boys in 1896; the two schools merged in 1974 (Choate history). In our view, the grade counts matter more to an applicant than any rate: Grade 10 is larger than Grade 9 (209 against 179), which suggests that Choate adds a meaningful number of new students after the first year.
When are the Choate deadlines for fall 2027 entry?
Choate says applications completed by January 15 receive full consideration, and that if all materials arrive by February 1 it will try to issue a decision by March 10 (Choate Admission FAQ). For students entering in fall 2027, those dates fall in 2027. Financial aid decisions are released on March 10 at the same time as admission decisions (Choate Tuition and Financial Aid FAQ).
| Step | Fall 2027 date |
|---|---|
| Online interview (one per applicant) | September 2026 to February 2027 |
| Application completed for full consideration | January 15, 2027 |
| Financial aid application (Clarity) | January 15, 2027 |
| Remaining materials and current-year grades | February 1, 2027 |
| Admission and financial aid decisions | March 10, 2027 |
| Applications after March 10 | Accepted, but unlikely to result in an offer |
| Gateway closes for fall 2027 | After June 15, 2027 |
Late files are still read: Choate considers applications completed after January 15 as time allows, but says a March 10 decision cannot be guaranteed for them. In our experience, families should treat January 15, 2027 as the real deadline and book the online interview in the fall, since Choate offers one interview per applicant.
What does the Choate application require?
Choate applications run through Gateway to Prep Schools in three parts (Choate Admission Process):
- Part 1: the Candidate Profile, submitted to Choate.
- Part 2: Applicant Essays and a Parent/Guardian Statement.
- Part 3: a Principal/Counselor Recommendation and Transcript Report, with current grades and the academic record from the last two years, plus recommendations from current English and mathematics teachers. A third teacher recommendation and a personal recommendation are optional.
The interview is strongly encouraged and must take place during the current cycle. All admission interviews take place online; Choate says it does not offer in-person interviews, on campus or otherwise. Each appointment is scheduled for 45 minutes, and the interviewer speaks one-on-one with the student for the first 20 to 25 minutes (Choate Admission Process). Applicants must choose day or boarding when they apply and select one entry grade (Choate Admission FAQ). Choate recommends the day option for students within a reasonable commute, and many day students live in New Haven County. Our guide to private school interview questions covers interview preparation.
Is Choate test optional for fall 2027?
Yes. Choate says standardized testing is an optional part of the application, that applicants are not penalized for applying without scores, and that it does not identify an average score or a cutoff (Choate Admission FAQ). Applicants who submit scores can send the tests below, and Choate superscores the SSAT, ISEE, PSAT, SAT and ACT by taking the highest section scores across test dates.
| Applicant | Accepted tests | Test dates accepted |
|---|---|---|
| Grade 9 | SSAT or ISEE | June 2026 or later |
| Grades 10 and 11 | SSAT, ISEE, PSAT, SAT or ACT | June 2025 or later |
| Postgraduate | PSAT, SAT or ACT | June 2024 or later |
| Non-native English speakers | TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo strongly recommended (minimum guidance: TOEFL 100, IELTS 7, Duolingo 130) | On or after June, per the Admission Process page |

Choate meets 100% of a family’s demonstrated financial need, uses the Clarity Application, and sets a financial aid deadline of January 15 (Choate Tuition and Financial Aid). Its home page lists a $17 million annual financial aid budget, 36% of students receiving aid and a 79% average tuition offset, without a year (Choate home page). Choate offers no merit scholarships or loans. It also says that applications are first reviewed without regard to aid status, but that financial need, with other factors, may influence admission decisions when the need of the pool exceeds its aid budget (Choate Tuition and Financial Aid FAQ).

Choate does not rank students, and its official GPA is unweighted. Choate offers eight Signature Programs, such as the Science Research Program and the John F. Kennedy ’35 Program in Government and Public Service, and a student may take part in no more than one (Choate School Profile 2026-2027; Choate Signature Programs). Choate college counselors meet individually with Fifth Form (Grade 11) students and start by getting to know each student before discussing specific colleges (Choate College Counseling). For context, see our analysis of Ivy League acceptance rates, our guide to building a reach, match and safety list, and our analysis of whether an Ivy League degree is worth it.
How does Choate compare with other Ten Schools members?
Choate is one of the ten founding members of the Ten Schools Admission Organization, with Andover, Deerfield, Exeter, Hill, Hotchkiss, Lawrenceville, Loomis Chaffee, St. Paul’s and Taft (Ten Schools Admission Organization), and a member of the Eight Schools Association, a collaborative of eight independent boarding schools (Eight Schools Association). Two features of its process stand out: testing is optional and all interviews are online.
| School | Boarding cost, 2026-27 | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Choate Rosemary Hall | $74,530 (tuition $73,530 plus $1,000 technology fee) | Choate |
| Phillips Exeter Academy | $71,797 tuition; books and supplies extra | Exeter |
| Phillips Academy Andover | $79,800 tuition | Andover |
| The Hotchkiss School | $80,800 (tuition $79,350 plus technology and health fees) | Hotchkiss |
| The Lawrenceville School | $82,710 comprehensive tuition | Lawrenceville |
The view of Oriel Admissions is that families comparing these schools should look past the sticker price to each school’s aid table and testing rule, since Choate publishes average family contributions by income, Lawrenceville publishes average aid awards by income, and other schools use other measures. Students who want to see the campus first can attend Choate Summer Programs, whose Academic Enrichment Program is open to students who have completed Grades 6 to 12 (Choate Summer Programs); our guide to summer programs for middle school students compares options.
