UGA Waitlist (University of Georgia): Acceptance Rate, Timeline, and How to Respond (2027)
By Rona Aydin

What does a waitlist offer mean at the University of Georgia?
A UGA waitlist offer means the university has not admitted you for fall and will return to your file after it sees how many admitted students deposit by May 1. We found no standalone UGA waitlist page; the policy appears each March in the Admissions blog, which refers to a FAQ on the wait list. The March 6, 2026 post says: “For some students, you will be offered a place on our wait list,” and “This year we have roughly 5,300 students on the wait list” (UGA Undergraduate Admissions blog, 2026 Wait List Decisions, March 6, 2026). The list has no order: “As stated on the FAQ, the wait list does not have a “ranking” of students from 1-X number, and you do not need to send in a “continued interest” communication, as we assume anyone who replies to stay on the wait list is still interested.” UGA explains why it waits: “we can never be sure how many students will enroll until after the May 1 commitment deposit deadline has passed.” The same post warns that the process is slow: “If you do not feel like you can wait until later May through July for a decision, it may be that the wait list option is not for you.” Our guide to what waitlisted means in college admissions covers the mechanics shared by most colleges; the UGA specifics follow.
| Fact | University of Georgia waitlist |
|---|---|
| Is the UGA waitlist ranked? | No. UGA: “the wait list does not have a “ranking” of students from 1-X number” |
| How a student replies | On the UGA status check, choosing one of three options: decline, stay on for Fall, or stay on for Fall and Spring. “Once you select an option, you cannot change it” |
| Letter of continued interest | Not needed. UGA: “you do not need to send in a “continued interest” communication, as we assume anyone who replies to stay on the wait list is still interested” |
| Reconfirmation | “In late April, we will reach back out to anyone who said yes to verify that they still want to remain on the wait list” |
| When offers begin | UGA: “we will not know about any wait list options until May at the earliest”; in 2026 the first wave of slightly over 400 Fall offers was posted at 4:00 p.m. ET on April 29, 2026, two days before the deposit deadline |
| When offers end | “it may be mid July before we finish making wait list decisions” (March 2026); “by mid‑July at the latest” (April 2026) |
| Deposit for waitlist admits | “7 days to submit their commitment deposit” (April 29, 2026 update) |
| Waitlist size, fall 2026 entry | “roughly 5,300 students on the wait list” (March 6, 2026) |
| Spring option | UGA reviews the waitlist “again later for potential Spring 2027 offers, once Fall enrollment is finalized” |
UGA uses the waitlist as a planned part of building the class, not as a last resort. On March 6, 2026 it wrote: “Based on the number of students who choose to enroll, we may admit several hundred students from the wait list, particularly in-state students, as they have the highest likelihood of exceeding our enrollment estimates” (UGA, 2026 Wait List Decisions). The same day, announcing its final admit wave, UGA reported “Approximately 15,400+ Accepted for Fall out of roughly 51,600+ total applicants” and said it expected “to use the wait list for a fair number of admissions offers after seeing the deposit data after May 1” (UGA Admissions blog, 2026 Final Freshman Admit Decisions, March 6, 2026). On April 29, 2026 it confirmed the design: “Previously, we shared that our intention was to come in slightly under our enrollment target on May 1 and build the class to the desired enrollment target through the Wait List” (UGA, 2026 Wait List Update, April 29, 2026). How in-state and out-of-state applicants fare in the main rounds is covered in our UGA out-of-state acceptance rate guide.
What is the University of Georgia waitlist acceptance rate?
By our calculation from UGA’s Common Data Set, 8.4% of students who accepted a waitlist place were admitted for fall 2024 (157 of 1,871), after 38.8% for fall 2023 (739 of 1,904) and 2.2% for fall 2022 (34 of 1,543). The rate swings with how many admitted students deposit, which is why UGA does not predict it in March. For fall 2025 the Common Data Set 2025-2026 reports 4,442 students offered a place and 437 accepting, and leaves the “Number of wait-listed students admitted” line blank, so no fall 2025 rate can be calculated; we do not estimate one (UGA Common Data Set 2025-2026, C2). The 437 accepting figure is far below the 1,543 to 1,904 of the three prior years, and UGA has not explained the change, so we show it as reported and draw no conclusion from it. Each CDS is published by the UGA Office of Institutional Research; the 2023-2024, 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 editions answer “Yes” to “Do you have a policy of placing students on a waiting list?” and the 2022-2023 answer is not legible in the PDF text.
| CDS year (entry term) | Offered a waitlist place | Accepted a place | Admitted from the waitlist | Admit rate (by our calculation) | Ranked? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2025-2026 (fall 2025) | 4,442 | 437 | Blank in the CDS (not reported) | Not calculable | No |
| 2024-2025 (fall 2024) | 3,620 | 1,871 | 157 | 8.4% | No |
| 2023-2024 (fall 2023) | 3,842 | 1,904 | 739 | 38.8% | No |
| 2022-2023 (fall 2022) | 3,022 | 1,543 | 34 | 2.2% | Not legible in the PDF; UGA blog posts say the list is not ranked |
The blog figures line up with the Common Data Set. UGA’s March 15, 2024 post said “This year we have roughly 3,627 students on the wait list,” and the CDS 2024-2025 records 3,620 offered a place for fall 2024 (UGA Admissions blog, 2024 Wait List Decisions, March 15, 2024). The “roughly 5,300” of March 2026 belongs to the fall 2026 cycle, which no published CDS covers yet; UGA released “slightly over 400” Fall 2026 offers in its first wave on April 29, 2026 and said more would follow “in waves over the coming weeks,” so the fall 2026 total will appear in the CDS 2026-2027 when UGA posts it (UGA, 2026 Wait List Update). For scale, UGA’s CDS C1 shows 16,257 admitted of 47,464 first-year applicants for fall 2025 (34.3% by our calculation) and 16,092 of 42,436 for fall 2024 (37.9%) (UGA CDS 2025-2026, C1; UGA CDS 2024-2025, C1). How UGA compares with other selective colleges is in our table of college waitlist rates at top schools.
When does the University of Georgia release waitlist decisions?
UGA releases waitlist offers around and after its May 1 commitment deposit deadline, in waves, and aims to finish by mid July. For the 2027 cycle UGA had not published waitlist dates as of November 7, 2026, so the dates below are the 2026 cycle’s, labeled as such. The 2026 sequence: final first-year decisions, including waitlist offers, posted “today, March 6th, at 4 PM ET” (UGA, 2026 Final Freshman Admit Decisions, March 6, 2026); a reconfirmation request to waitlisted students in late April; the first wave of waitlist admits at 4:00 p.m. ET on April 29, 2026, two days before the deposit deadline, with the stated goal of “maintaining our target enrollment balance of roughly 80% in‑state and 20% out‑of‑state students”; then “Wait List offers will continue to be made in waves over the coming weeks as we monitor responses and deposits,” with UGA expecting to “finalize all decisions for the Class of 2030 by mid‑July at the latest, and hopefully sooner” (UGA, 2026 Wait List Update, April 29, 2026). Spring offers come last: UGA said it would “review the Wait List again later for potential Spring 2027 offers, once Fall enrollment is finalized.”
| Step (2027 cycle, fall 2027 entry) | UGA stated window or date | Source and label |
|---|---|---|
| Regular Decision application deadline | January 1, 2027 (materials January 15, 2027) | UGA deadlines page, Fall tab, which prints no year |
| Final decisions, including waitlist offers | “Mid March” (2027); in 2026 the release was March 6 at 4 PM ET | UGA deadlines page; 2026 Final Freshman Admit Decisions post |
| Reply to the waitlist offer | Through the UGA status check; UGA gives no reply deadline in its posts | 2026 Wait List Decisions post |
| Reconfirmation | “In late April” (2026 wording) | 2026 Wait List Decisions post |
| Commitment deposit deadline for admitted students | May 1, 2027 | UGA deadlines page; Common Reply Date |
| First waitlist offers | UGA says “May at the earliest”; in 2026 the first wave came on April 29 at 4:00 p.m. ET | 2026 Wait List Decisions and 2026 Wait List Update posts |
| Later waves | “in waves over the coming weeks” (2026 wording) | 2026 Wait List Update post |
| Final waitlist decisions | “mid July” (2026 wording) | 2026 Wait List Decisions and 2026 Wait List Update posts |
| Spring offers | After Fall enrollment is finalized (2026: “potential Spring 2027 offers”) | 2026 Wait List Update post |
The timing has been stable. The March 15, 2024 post said: “We will most likely not know details about the wait list until after early to mid May,” and “it may be mid July before we finish making wait list decisions” (UGA, 2024 Wait List Decisions, March 15, 2024). In April 2024 UGA added that “WL offers generally go out in batches” and that first offers would come shortly after the deposit deadlines (UGA Admissions blog, 2024 Wait List Planning, April 29, 2024). UGA’s First-Year FAQs give the general rule: “Final Decision: Mid‑March,” and “Decision timelines depend on application volume and review progress” (UGA Admissions, First-Year FAQs). Release dates for the colleges you are weighing against UGA are in our Regular Decision notification dates calendar.
What does the University of Georgia ask waitlisted students to do?
One reply on the status check, then a reconfirmation in late April, and nothing else. UGA’s instruction is: “Follow the instructions on the status check to let us know if you want to stay on the wait list or if you want to decline this option and move forward with admission at another college” (UGA, 2026 Wait List Decisions, March 6, 2026). The 2026 post offered three choices: decline the waitlist, remain on it for the Fall term, or remain on it for Fall and Spring, with Spring offers considered after Fall offers are made. The choice is final: “Once you select an option, you cannot change it so be sure to think about your decision before you make your selection.” Then: “In late April, we will reach back out to anyone who said yes to verify that they still want to remain on the wait list.” UGA’s posts do not ask for a letter, new recommendations, new test scores or an interview, and UGA says the status-check reply is the signal of interest it needs. The posts do not ask for mid-year or final grades separately either.
If an offer comes, the clock is short. The April 29, 2026 update says: “Students admitted from the Wait List will see their decision posted to their status page at 4:00 p.m. ET today (4/29/2026) and will have 7 days to submit their commitment deposit” (UGA, 2026 Wait List Update, April 29, 2026); the April 2024 planning post described roughly a week to respond (UGA, 2024 Wait List Planning, April 29, 2024). UGA also said on April 29, 2026 that “No students will be denied or offered the Transfer Pathway today,” so students not admitted in the first wave stayed on the list. In the experience of Oriel Admissions, the two decisions that matter at UGA are made in March, not May: whether to say yes at all, given that an answer may not come until July, and whether to include Spring, which commits a student to a possible January 2028 start. Our guide on how to get off a college waitlist explains the general approach; at UGA most of it reduces to replying promptly and keeping your grades up.
What should a waitlisted student not send to the University of Georgia?
- Do not send a letter of continued interest. UGA: “you do not need to send in a “continued interest” communication, as we assume anyone who replies to stay on the wait list is still interested” (2026 Wait List Decisions, March 6, 2026). Nearly the same sentence appeared in the March 15, 2024 post.
- Do not ask for your position on the list. UGA: “the wait list does not have a “ranking” of students from 1-X number” (2026 Wait List Decisions).
- Do not expect to change your reply. UGA: “Once you select an option, you cannot change it so be sure to think about your decision before you make your selection” (2026 Wait List Decisions).
- Do not send extra recommendations, essays or portfolios. UGA’s wait list posts request none of these, and its 2026 post lists the status-check reply, followed by the late April reconfirmation, as the actions a waitlisted student takes.
- Do not ask for a decision before May. UGA: “we will not know about any wait list options until May at the earliest” (2026 Wait List Decisions), and in 2026 the first offers came on April 29, two days before the May 1 deadline, as part of the plan UGA had announced in March.
- Do not treat the waitlist as a plan. UGA: “If you decide to stay on the wait list, you should still move forward with an alternate college plan” (2026 Wait List Decisions).
All quotations are from the 2026 Wait List Decisions post of March 6, 2026 and the 2024 Wait List Decisions post of March 15, 2024 on the UGA Undergraduate Admissions blog, read November 7, 2026. Because UGA writes a new post each March, a student waitlisted in March 2027 should read that year’s post and follow it where it differs.
How should a waitlisted student plan April to July 2027?
In our view the plan has five parts, and each follows from what UGA has said. First, deposit at another college by May 1, 2027; UGA itself says to “move forward with an alternate college plan,” and a UGA offer, if it comes, arrives with “7 days to submit their commitment deposit,” so the deposit elsewhere is the cost of keeping the UGA option open. Second, answer the late April reconfirmation the day it arrives; UGA uses it to verify who still wants to remain on the list. Third, keep senior grades steady; a June offer is an admission to the same class, and the posts give no sign that UGA relaxes its expectations for it. Fourth, do not write a letter of continued interest; UGA says it is not needed. UGA’s waitlist posts also say nothing about ability to pay, so our note on whether being full pay helps on a college waitlist does not apply to UGA on its published statements. Fifth, decide in March whether a Spring 2028 start would suit you, because the Fall and Spring option cannot be changed later.
Two practical facts for families. On housing, UGA’s March 6, 2026 post says its commitment to incoming first-year students includes “providing on-campus housing” and does not single out waitlist admits; a student admitted in June should ask University Housing about the application window at once, since the posts do not state one (UGA, 2026 Wait List Decisions). On aid, UGA’s waitlist posts do not address scholarships or financial aid for waitlist admits, so a family that needs aid should ask the Office of Student Financial Aid before the 7 day deposit window closes. In-state students should note UGA’s own statement that they are the group most likely to receive waitlist offers, “as they have the highest likelihood of exceeding our enrollment estimates,” and its stated target of “roughly 80% in‑state and 20% out‑of‑state students” (UGA, 2026 Wait List Update).
Frequently Asked Questions About the University of Georgia Waitlist
By our calculation from the UGA Common Data Set, 8.4% of students who accepted a waitlist place were admitted for fall 2024 (157 of 1,871), 38.8% for fall 2023 (739 of 1,904) and 2.2% for fall 2022 (34 of 1,543). The 2025-2026 Common Data Set leaves the fall 2025 admitted count blank, so no rate exists for that year.
UGA said it had roughly 5,300 students on the wait list in March 2026 for fall 2026 entry. Its Common Data Set shows 4,442 offered a place for fall 2025, 3,620 for fall 2024, 3,842 for fall 2023 and 3,022 for fall 2022.
Around and after the May 1 commitment deposit deadline, in waves, with final decisions by mid July. In 2026 the first wave of slightly over 400 offers was posted at 4:00 p.m. ET on April 29, 2026. UGA had not published 2027 waitlist dates as of November 7, 2026.
No. UGA states in its wait list posts that the list does not have a ranking of students from 1 to X, and its Common Data Set answers No to the ranked waiting list question for fall 2023, fall 2024 and fall 2025.
No. UGA says you do not need to send a continued interest communication, because it assumes anyone who replies to stay on the wait list is still interested. The reply on the status check and the late April reconfirmation are the signals UGA uses. Oriel Admissions advises students to follow that instruction rather than send unrequested material.
Follow the instructions on your UGA status check and choose one option: decline, remain on the list for Fall, or remain for Fall and Spring. UGA says the choice cannot be changed once made, and it contacts students again in late April to confirm they still want to stay on.
Seven days. The April 29, 2026 update says students admitted from the Wait List will have 7 days to submit their commitment deposit after the decision posts to their status page.
Yes. UGA says that if you stay on the wait list you should still move forward with an alternate college plan, since it will not know about wait list options until May at the earliest. Deposit at your chosen alternative by May 1, 2027, and withdraw it if UGA later admits you and you decide to enroll.
