How to Get Into Emory: Emory College and Oxford College Admission, Early Decision and Essays

What is the Emory acceptance rate?

Emory reports admission figures separately for its two entry points. For the Class of 2030, Emory College in Atlanta admitted 3,852 of 42,873 applicants, and Oxford College admitted 2,773 of 27,113 (Emory Class of 2030 Admission Profile, “All data as of June 2026”). Many students apply to both colleges, so the two applicant counts cannot be added together.

For the Class of 2029, Emory reported that 37,855 students applied across all admission plans, that 3,621 were admitted to Emory College and 3,142 to Oxford College, and that 1,105 were admitted to both (Emory News, March 28, 2025). Emory’s Common Data Set 2025-2026, for the same fall 2025 entering class, reports 37,561 applicants, 3,869 admits and 1,443 enrolled first-year students. In our reading, its admit and enrollment counts match Emory College alone, while its applicant count is close to the university-wide total, so we do not use the Common Data Set to calculate an acceptance rate for either college. Should you apply to Emory College, Oxford College or both?

Emory says it “offers two ways to begin your journey: Emory College in Atlanta or Oxford College in Oxford, Georgia,” and that applicants may “Apply to one or both through the Common App.” It adds that “All students earn the same Emory degree, with Oxford students transitioning to the Atlanta campus by junior year” (Emory Admission, how to apply). Students may apply Early Decision to both colleges, or “apply ED to one and Regular Decision to the other” (Emory Admission, plans and deadlines). Emory’s FAQ calls Early Decision to both colleges an exception to the one-school Early Decision rule, “as both are part of Emory University” (Emory Admission FAQ).

For the Class of 2030, Oxford College admitted 10% of its applicants and Emory College 9%, so in our view Oxford is a different first two years rather than an easier way in. A student who would be glad to spend two years on a smaller campus before moving to Atlanta should consider applying to both.

How does Early Decision work at Emory?

Emory offers Early Decision I, Early Decision II and Regular Decision, and states that “Both ED plans are binding: if we make the education affordable, you must pay your admission deposit and enroll” (Emory Admission, plans and deadlines). For the Class of 2030, Early Decision supplied 1,078 of 3,852 Emory College admits and 602 of 2,773 Oxford College admits; Emory does not split them between the two rounds. Its Common Data Set 2025-2026 lists 4,728 Early Decision applications and 1,049 Early Decision admits, but because its counts may not all cover the same population, we do not calculate an Early Decision rate from them. The early pool is also self-selected, so no published figure shows whether applying early changes any one student’s chances.

Emory’s FAQ adds a caution for families who need to compare aid: “If your ability to enroll depends on receiving a specific amount of merit scholarships or need-based financial aid, we strongly encourage you to apply Regular Decision” (Emory Admission FAQ). When are the Emory deadlines for fall 2027?

Does Emory require the SAT or ACT?

No. Emory states that it “is test optional for first-year students who would start in fall 2027,” that “SAT/ACT scores are not required,” and that “Emory superscores both the SAT and the ACT” (Emory Admission, testing). Its FAQ also says Emory does not require tests for first-year or transfer students who plan to enroll in fall 2028, but the announcement it links to covers fall 2027 only, so students applying for fall 2028 should confirm the policy later.

In the Common Data Set 2025-2026, 47% of enrolled students submitted the SAT and 21% the ACT; among those who submitted, the middle 50% ranges were 1480 to 1540 (median 1510) and 33 to 35. The Class of 2030 admission profile lists middle 50% SAT ranges of 1500 to 1550 at Emory College and 1490 to 1550 at Oxford College. What does Emory look for in applicants?

In its Common Data Set 2025-2026, Emory rates the rigor of the secondary school record, GPA, extracurricular activities, talent or ability, and character and personal qualities as very important; the application essay, recommendations and volunteer work as important; and class rank, the interview, first-generation status, alumni relation, geographic and state residency, and work experience as considered. It does not consider religious affiliation or the level of applicant interest. Of the 17% of fall 2025 enrollees who reported a class rank, 76% were in the top tenth.

Emory states that “Demonstrated interest” is not a factor, and that “Things like visiting campus, attending a virtual session, or talking with or emailing your admission counselor have no impact on the evaluation of your application.” It also says a legacy connection is considered “but is in no way a guarantee of admission” (Emory Admission FAQ). How should you approach the Emory supplemental essays?

Emory kept its short answer questions for 2026-2027 (Emory admission blog, August 1, 2026). Every applicant answers “What academic areas are you interested in exploring at Emory University and why?” (200 words recommended), and then one of four 150-word questions:

• A community the applicant has been part of and helped to change or shape for the better.
• “Reflect on a personal experience where you intentionally expanded your cultural awareness.”
• How the applicant might contribute to Emory’s mission of service to humanity.
• How the applicant navigates disagreement in a way that promotes progress and meaningful dialogue.

In our experience, the academic interest answer works best when it names a specific field and explains what the student has already done in it, rather than listing Emory programs. Our Emory supplemental essay guide covers each prompt.

Does Emory offer interviews?

Emory states that it “does not offer evaluative interviews with admission staff or alumni” (Emory Admission FAQ). Applicants who want to speak informally with an alumnus can ask the admission office. Scholar Program finalists take part in interviews during the finalist visit (Emory Scholar Programs).

How does financial aid work at Emory?

Emory says that “students from families earning up to $200,000, with typical assets, qualify for free tuition” under Emory Advantage Plus; to qualify, students “must be domestic, first-degree undergraduates eligible for federal financial aid” and “must qualify for need-based aid, which is reviewed annually.” Emory also says that “For first-degree domestic undergraduates, need-based loans have been replaced with institutional grants.” For merit aid, “Emory offers partial to full merit-based scholarships through the Emory University Scholar programs” (Emory Admission, financial aid). To be considered for the Scholar Programs, applicants answer yes to the Scholar question on the Common App; Emory says “You will not be considered otherwise” (Emory Scholar Programs).

What does the Emory acceptance rate mean for applicants?

In the view of Oriel Admissions, Emory College and Oxford College are both reaches for most applicants at rates of 9% and 10%, and the decisions that shape an Emory application most are which college or colleges to apply to and whether to commit in Early Decision I or II.
