The College of Arts and Sciences is Penn’s liberal arts school and the largest of the four undergraduate schools. It offers more than 60 majors across the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. If you are drawn to traditional academic disciplines, interdisciplinary study, or are unsure of your major and want the flexibility to explore, the College is the right choice.

The School of Engineering and Applied Science (Penn Engineering) offers majors in computer science, bioengineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, systems engineering, and several other technical disciplines. If you have a clear interest in engineering, computer science, or applied science, Penn Engineering is the appropriate fit. Penn strongly values students who have taken the most rigorous courses available to them. For students at competitive NJ public schools like Millburn, West Windsor-Plainsboro, Ridgewood, or Livingston, or NYC private schools like Trinity, Dalton, or Stuyvesant, the expectation is that you are taking the most challenging courses available. Admissions officers know these schools well and understand exactly what is offered.

Standardized Testing: SAT and ACT

Standardized test scores are required for the 2025-2026 admissions cycle. Applicants must submit either SAT or ACT scores. This requirement was reinstated after a period of test-optional policies during the pandemic.

The middle 50% score range for enrolled students in the Class of 2029 is approximately 1510-1570 on the SAT and 34-36 on the ACT. These are extremely high ranges. The “Why Penn” Essay (200-450 words)

And they show that you have thought carefully about why Penn specifically, and not just any excellent university, is the right place for your goals.

Be specific. If you are applying to Wharton, reference specific courses and student organizations. Mention groups like the Wharton Undergraduate Finance Club or Wharton Social Impact Initiative. Reference the unique structure of the Wharton curriculum. If you are applying to the College, reference specific departments and interdisciplinary programs. Programs like PPE (Philosophy, Politics, and Economics) or the Biological Basis of Behavior major stand out. Mention research opportunities with specific faculty. If you are applying to Penn Engineering, reference specific labs, the integrated approach to engineering education, or opportunities to combine engineering with courses at Wharton or the College.

Reference Penn’s broader culture as well. Mention the One University Policy that allows students to take courses in any of Penn’s twelve schools. Do not write a “Why Penn” essay that could apply to any top university by swapping out the school name. If you could replace “Penn” with “Columbia” or “Duke” and the essay would still work, it is not specific enough.

Community Essay (150-200 words)

Prompt: Penn’s culture is driven by engagement and connection. How do you plan to contribute to and benefit from the Penn community?

Strategy: This essay assesses how you would function as a member of Penn’s community. Penn’s culture is collaborative, interdisciplinary, and socially engaged. Your strongest responses should identify something specific you would bring — a perspective, a skill, an initiative — and connect it to Penn’s existing community resources.

Making Your Community Essay Specific

Avoid vague claims about loving diversity or wanting to meet interesting people. Be concrete. Reference specific student organizations, community engagement programs like the Netter Center for Community Partnerships, or the residential college system. Describe how your past involvement in communities — school, neighborhood, online, cultural — has shaped how you engage with others and how you would translate that to Penn’s campus.

School-Specific Essay (200-450 words)

Depending on which undergraduate school you select, you may receive an additional prompt. Wharton applicants, for example, are often asked about their interest in business and how they see themselves contributing to the Wharton community. Penn Engineering applicants may be asked about their engineering interests and experiences. Nursing applicants may be asked about their motivation for pursuing nursing.

These school-specific essays must be consistent with the rest of your application. If you are applying to Wharton, your essay should reference specific experiences that demonstrate your interest in business, leadership, or entrepreneurship — not generic statements about wanting to make money or work on Wall Street. If you are applying to Penn Engineering, your essay should connect specific technical projects, research, or coursework to what Penn Engineering offers.

Recommendation Letters: Who to Ask and Why It Matters

Penn requires two teacher recommendation letters and one counselor recommendation. The teacher recommendations should come from core academic subject teachers who taught you in your junior or senior year. Choose teachers who know you well. “Know you well” is the operative phrase. A glowing letter from a teacher who can speak specifically about your intellectual curiosity and classroom contributions is invaluable. That kind of detailed, personal letter is infinitely more valuable than a generic letter from a teacher who gave you an A but cannot say much about you as a person.

The strategic approach is to choose teachers from two different disciplines who can highlight different strengths. If you are applying to Wharton, choose one recommender from math or economics. The second letter should come from a humanities teacher to show range. If you are applying to the College as a prospective humanities concentrator, consider a literature teacher and a history teacher. Each should speak to different aspects of your intellectual life to create a more complete picture. For Penn Engineering applicants, at least one letter from a math or science teacher is strategically important.

Timing and Preparation for Recommendations

Ask your recommenders as early as possible. Teachers at competitive high schools in NJ and NYC often receive dozens of recommendation requests, and the quality of letters can decline when written under time pressure. The single most common mistake in Penn applications is the “well-rounded” extracurricular list. Students join 10 clubs, hold minor leadership roles in several, and present a profile that looks busy but not distinctive. Penn’s admissions framework emphasizes depth of engagement and meaningful impact — not breadth.

The ideal extracurricular profile for Penn has two or three core activities where you have achieved measurable impact. This does not mean you need to be a national champion or a nonprofit founder. It means you need to show sustained engagement, progressive responsibility, and tangible results. A student who spent four years building a financial literacy program for underserved middle school students tells a compelling story. Reaching 500 participants and training 20 peer tutors demonstrates real impact. That profile is far stronger than a student who lists memberships in 10 organizations without evidence of real commitment to any of them.

Penn particularly values activities that align with its institutional identity: interdisciplinary thinking, entrepreneurship, community engagement, and the practical application of knowledge.
