What Is the PSAT 8/9?
The PSAT 8/9 is the entry point to the SAT Suite of Assessments, the family of tests that also includes the PSAT 10, the PSAT/NMSQT, and the SAT. College Board describes its purpose as early feedback on a student’s knowledge in the areas that matter most for college and career readiness.
Students take it at school, and schools or districts handle registration. A family cannot sign a child up independently, and a school that does not order the test does not offer it. The test is digital, and like the SAT it has a Reading and Writing section and a Math section.
When Is the PSAT 8/9 Given in 2026-27?
College Board sets two testing windows for the school year, and each school chooses a date inside one of them.
| Window | Dates | Given alongside |
|---|---|---|
| Fall 2026 | October 1 to 30, 2026 | SAT School Day and the PSAT/NMSQT |
| Spring 2027 | March 1 to April 30, 2027 | SAT School Day and the PSAT 10 |
The school counselor can say which window a school uses and for which grade. Our guide to when PSAT scores come out lists the score release dates.
What Is on the Test?
The test takes 2 hours and 14 minutes. Most questions are multiple choice, and some mathematics questions ask the student to type in an answer.
| Section | Time | Questions |
|---|---|---|
| Reading and Writing | 64 minutes | 54 |
| Math | 70 minutes | 44 |
| Total | 134 minutes | 98 |
The format is the same as the SAT’s, with content set for grades 8 and 9. That is the main reason to take it seriously as practice: the screen, the timing, and the question styles are the ones a student will meet again in grade 11.
What Is the PSAT 8/9 Score Range?
The total score runs from 240 to 1440. It is the sum of two section scores, Reading and Writing and Math, each reported from 120 to 720.
The range is lower than the SAT’s 400 to 1600 because the test is written for younger students, not because it uses a different yardstick. College Board places every test in the suite on one scale, so a section score means the same level of skill whichever test produced it. A student can therefore read growth directly from one test to the next. Our guide to PSAT scores covers the later tests in detail.
What Is a Good PSAT 8/9 Score?
College Board publishes a benchmark for each section and grade. A student at or above the benchmark is on track for college readiness by the end of high school.
| Grade | Reading and Writing benchmark | Math benchmark | 2025-26 mean total | Met both benchmarks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | 390 | 430 | 810 (Reading and Writing 413, Math 398) | 31% |
| 9 | 410 | 450 | 863 (Reading and Writing 440, Math 422) | 34% |
Added together, the benchmarks come to 820 for an eighth grader and 860 for a ninth grader by Oriel Admissions calculation, which is almost exactly where the national averages sit. A score at the benchmark is therefore about average for the grade. For a student who is aiming at highly selective colleges, the more useful question is how far above it the score falls, and above all how the two sections compare.
A gap between the sections is the most valuable thing the report shows. A ninth grader with a strong Math score and a Reading and Writing score near the benchmark has three years to close the gap through reading, which is far easier to do slowly than in the months before the SAT.
How Does It Compare With the PSAT 10, the PSAT/NMSQT, and the SAT?
The four tests form a ladder. The format stays the same, and the score range and benchmarks rise with the grade.
| Test | Typical grade | Score range | Reading and Writing benchmark | Math benchmark |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PSAT 8/9 | 8 | 240 to 1440 | 390 | 430 |
| PSAT 8/9 | 9 | 240 to 1440 | 410 | 450 |
| PSAT 10 or PSAT/NMSQT | 10 | 320 to 1520 | 430 | 480 |
| PSAT/NMSQT | 11 | 320 to 1520 | 460 | 510 |
| SAT | 11 and 12 | 400 to 1600 | 480 | 530 |
The benchmarks rise by 20 to 30 points a year in each section. A student who holds the same margin above the benchmark from grade 8 to grade 11 is growing at the expected pace, and a student whose margin widens is growing faster.
Does the PSAT 8/9 Count for College Admissions or National Merit?
No to both. Colleges do not receive the scores, and nothing from the test appears on a transcript or an application. The National Merit Scholarship Program uses only the PSAT/NMSQT, and only when it is taken in grade 11. Our guide to National Merit Semifinalist cutoffs explains that competition.
The score can matter in two smaller ways. Some schools use it for course placement in grade 9 or 10. And some programs for advanced younger students accept it as an above-grade-level test. Johns Hopkins CTY, for example, accepts it from students in grades 5 and 6.
Should a Student Prepare for It?
Not intensively. The result has no stakes, and its value depends on being an honest reading of where the student stands. A student who has been coached for a test in grade 8 produces a number that tells the family less.
Light familiarity is enough. College Board offers free practice in the same digital format, and one timed practice test removes the surprise of the interface. Serious preparation belongs later, and our SAT and ACT preparation timeline sets out when.
How Should Families Use the Results?
Oriel Admissions advises families to use the report for three decisions. The first is course placement, especially in mathematics, where a strong score supports a request for the more advanced track. The second is reading. A Reading and Writing score that trails Math in grade 8 or 9 is a signal to build a steady reading habit now. The third is the testing calendar: a ninth grader already near 1200 can plan an earlier SAT, while most students should wait.
What the result should not do is set expectations for college. Three years of growth separate this test from the SAT, and students move a great deal in that time. Families planning the first year of high school can continue with our freshman year plan and our comparison of the SAT and the PSAT.
Frequently Asked Questions About the PSAT 8/9
It is the first test in the SAT Suite of Assessments, taken at school by students in grades 8 and 9. It has a Reading and Writing section and a Math section and gives early feedback on college readiness.
The total score runs from 240 to 1440. Each of the two sections, Reading and Writing and Math, is scored from 120 to 720.
The grade-level benchmarks are 390 in Reading and Writing and 430 in Math for grade 8, and 410 and 450 for grade 9. In 2025-26 the national averages were 810 for eighth graders and 863 for ninth graders.
Schools choose a date between October 1 and 30, 2026 or between March 1 and April 30, 2027.
It takes 2 hours and 14 minutes and has 98 questions: 54 in Reading and Writing over 64 minutes and 44 in Math over 70 minutes.
No. Only the PSAT/NMSQT taken in grade 11 is used for the National Merit Scholarship Program.
No. The scores are not sent to colleges and do not appear on a transcript or an application.
Light familiarity with the digital format is enough. Oriel Admissions advises families to treat the result as an honest baseline for course placement and reading, not as a test to be coached.
