Purdue Acceptance Rate: 43.4%, the Rare Rate That Rose, and the Gradients It Hides

By Rona Aydin

Purdue Bell Tower, Purdue University

TL;DR: The Purdue acceptance rate was approximately 43.4% for the Class of 2029, with roughly 37,800 admitted from about 87,000 applications per Common Data Set reporting, its largest applicant pool ever and up from 38.4% the prior cycle, a rare rate increase driven by deliberate enrollment management rather than softening demand. The headline conceals steep gradients: Purdue’s Engineering college admitted around 34.7% while Education admitted about 70.5%, Indiana residents were admitted near 71% against roughly 39% out of state and 22.5% international, and Purdue is test expected, with 97% of admits submitting scores. The enrolled class averaged a 1337 SAT and 3.81 GPA, and the November 1 Early Action deadline effectively closes the door on the most impacted majors, including computer science, engineering, and nursing.

The Rare Acceptance Rate That Rose, and Why That Is Not Softness

Purdue broke the flagship script this cycle: applications hit a fourteenth consecutive record near 87,000, and the acceptance rate went up, from 38.4% to roughly 43.4%, because West Lafayette chose to admit more students after years of deliberately squeezing enrollment that had strained campus housing. Read correctly, the move is capacity policy, not declining standards; the enrolled class posted record academic numbers, a 1337 average SAT and 3.81 average GPA, while the decade long arc still runs steeply downward from the 68.9% of the Class of 2025. Purdue also remains one of the few large publics holding a test expected line: 97% of admits submitted SAT or ACT scores, with a middle 50% of 1220 to 1480 and 28 to 34, making a scoreless Purdue application a self imposed handicap.

The gradient is the real admissions story: the distance between Engineering and Education is thirty five points inside one university, and the residency spread nearly doubles an Indiana applicant’s odds over an out of state one. Purdue admits by college and program, so the honest question is never the university rate but the rate of the exact door being knocked on.

The Deadline That Is Really a Closing Bell

Purdue’s Early Action deadline on November 1 is non binding, but for the most impacted programs it functions as the application deadline outright: computer science, the engineering majors, and nursing accept applications after November 1 only if space allows, and space rarely allows. A strong candidate for those programs who files in December has not applied late; they have effectively not applied. The other calendar note is the waitlist, the most volatile in selective admissions: recent cycles have swung from nine waitlist admits to nearly all of them depending on where yield landed, which makes the Purdue waitlist a genuine lottery ticket rather than a plan. Our test policy tracker maps the test expected fine print.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Purdue Acceptance Rate

What is the Purdue acceptance rate?

Approximately 43.4% for the Class of 2029, with roughly 37,800 admitted from about 87,000 applications, Purdue’s largest pool ever per Common Data Set reporting. The rate rose from 38.4% the prior cycle as Purdue deliberately expanded admits after years of enrollment squeezing.

What is the Purdue Engineering acceptance rate?

Around 34.7% for the Class of 2029, well below the university line, while the least impacted colleges admitted near 70%. Purdue admits by college and program, so the rate that matters is the one attached to the specific major on the application.

Is Purdue test optional?

No. Purdue is test expected: it expects SAT or ACT scores from all applicants absent genuine extenuating circumstances, and 97% of admits submitted them, with a middle 50% of 1220 to 1480 SAT and 28 to 34 ACT. Applying without scores is a self imposed handicap.

Why is November 1 so important for Purdue applicants?

The Early Action deadline is also the effective final deadline for Purdue’s most impacted programs: computer science, the engineering majors, and nursing accept later applications only if space allows, and it rarely does. For those majors, December applicants have effectively missed the cycle.

Does residency matter at Purdue?

Enormously: Indiana residents were admitted near 71% while out of state applicants ran about 39% and internationals about 22.5%. The out of state figure still compares favorably to most flagships, which is part of why Purdue’s national applicant pool keeps setting records.

Is the Purdue waitlist worth accepting?

Accept it, then plan around it. Purdue’s waitlist is the most volatile in selective admissions, swinging in recent cycles from nine admits to nearly everyone depending on yield, so it is a genuine lottery ticket: worth holding, never worth relying on.
