How to Get Into Texas A&M for Engineering: General Engineering, ETAM Placement and the Fall 2027 Deadline

What is the Texas A&M engineering acceptance rate?
Texas A&M does not publish applicant or admit counts for the College of Engineering on the pages we reviewed, so the official figures cover all first-year applicants. Its Common Data Set 2025-2026 reports the fall 2025 entering class, the Class of 2029, by residency. No fall 2026 Common Data Set was posted when we checked.

The university rate does not describe engineering, because engineering applicants face a second review. Texas A&M states that “All applicants to the College of Engineering will be reviewed for placement into General Engineering including students who qualify for Top 10% automatic admission,” and that this includes computer science, biological and agricultural engineering, industrial distribution and engineering technology (Texas A&M Freshman Admissions). How does Texas A&M review engineering applicants?
The College of Engineering says it “has moved to a total holistic review process. This policy applies to all engineering applications, including Texas A&M automatic admits, and is handled entirely by the Office of Admissions.” The factors listed are academic achievements, “class rank and SAT and/or ACT scores, as well as completion of Texas A&M’s recommended high school coursework,” with a note that “Submission of SAT/ACT scores is optional”; personal achievements, including activities, service, leadership, employment, talents and awards; and the essay and short answers (Texas A&M Engineering, Apply Now).
Engineering applicants are considered for General Engineering at College Station, Texas A&M Engineering at Blinn, Engineering at Galveston and Engineering at McAllen. Students may also apply separately to an Engineering Academy, coenrolling at a partner community college before transferring to Texas A&M after one to two years (Texas A&M Engineering, Apply Now). Every applicant writes an essay of up to 750 words (“Tell us your story”), a short answer of up to 250 words about a life event that prepared the student for college, and four answers of up to 100 words, including “In a few words, why have you chosen your academic major(s)?” (Texas A&M Freshman Admissions).
How does Entry to a Major work in Texas A&M engineering?
Texas A&M Engineering has “more than 20 degree options,” and first-year students “follow a common general engineering curriculum” before applying to majors through ETAM, “which can be as early as your second semester” (Texas A&M Engineering, Entry to a Major). Under the rules for the Class of 2030, the newest posted, students must apply to three majors and may rank up to five, and have “three opportunities to enter a major, starting with their second semester and ending no later than their fourth semester.” Eligibility requires a Texas A&M cumulative and term GPA of at least 2.0 and two engineering, two science and two math courses at Texas A&M with a C or better. ETAM “places students in their highest preferred major possible based on their academic performance, their ETAM application content and the program’s capacity” (General Engineering Class of 2030 Requirements).
Students get automatic entry to their first-choice major if they meet the eligibility rules and “have a 3.75 cumulative GPA or higher at the conclusion of the semester the application is submitted, or the student must be named a National Merit Scholar (i.e., semifinalist or finalist),” along with full-time enrollment and a clean academic record (same source). Texas A&M publishes placement results for each cycle.

When is the Texas A&M engineering deadline for fall 2027?
Texas A&M has one College Station application deadline for fall entry, December 1, 2026, and no Early Decision or Early Action. It says that “applying early does not guarantee an early decision,” that students who qualify for top 10% admission typically hear within three weeks of completing the file, and that “Generally, most students in review will receive a decision between January 1 and late March” (Texas A&M Freshman Admissions).

Does Texas A&M require the SAT or ACT for engineering?
No, not for fall 2027. Texas A&M “is test optional and will not require ACT or SAT scores for freshman applicants,” and considers “Your highest total score from a single test date.” Its Office of Admissions “intends to reinstate the requirement for standardized test scores (SAT or ACT) starting with applicants for Spring or Fall 2028,” a change that “is not yet final and must be approved by the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents”; the page adds, “Spring/Fall 2027: Applicants are not affected” (Texas A&M Freshman Admissions).
Among fall 2025 enrolled first-year students, 76.7% (9,605) submitted the SAT and 18.7% (2,339) the ACT. The middle 50% was 1160 to 1390 on the SAT, with 570 to 710 on SAT Math, and 24 to 32 on the ACT, according to section C9 of the Common Data Set 2025-2026. These ranges cover all colleges. In our view, an engineering applicant whose math score sits near or above the top of those ranges should send it, since the College of Engineering lists test scores among the academic factors it reviews.
What does Texas A&M engineering cost?
For 2026-2027, Texas A&M lists first-year tuition of $8,886 for Texas residents and $36,877 for nonresidents, with $3,970 in required fees and $12,944 for on-campus food and housing, in section G1 of its Common Data Set 2025-2026, which also reports that tuition and fees vary by program. Engineering students pay more than these base figures: “Differential tuition is an additional charge,” and it is paid by “All undergraduate students majoring in engineering” (Texas A&M Engineering, Differential Tuition); that page does not state the amount.

University scholarships are applied for through the admission application, which “opens August 1, and closes December 1” (Aggie One Stop, Undergraduate Scholarships). Under the Competitive Scholarship waiver, “authorized under Texas Education Code 54.213a,” a nonresident undergraduate who holds competitive scholarships “of at least $4,000 per academic year” may qualify to pay resident tuition under an optional state waiver that Texas A&M offers, and each qualifying scholarship must be at least $1,000 (Aggie One Stop, Competitive Scholarship Non-Resident Tuition Waiver).
How should students build a Texas A&M engineering application?
The view of Oriel Admissions is that a Texas A&M engineering application has two audiences over time: the Office of Admissions, which decides General Engineering placement through holistic review, and the ETAM review after enrollment, which places students by academic performance, the ETAM application and program capacity. The application should show class rank and coursework through calculus and physics, use the 100-word major answer to name a specific engineering interest, and be complete well before December 1, 2026, since the same deadline closes university scholarship consideration.
