How to Get Into UT Austin for Engineering: Admit Rates, Calculus Readiness and Deadlines

By Rona Aydin

The University of Texas at Austin Main Building
TL;DR: We found no published admit rate for the Cockrell School of Engineering at UT Austin. For the whole university, its Common Data Set shows 20,154 of 90,690 first-year applicants admitted for fall 2025, 22.2% by our calculation: 35.9% of Texas residents, 7.5% of out-of-state applicants and 7.9% of international applicants. Every engineering applicant must meet a Calculus Readiness Requirement and send an official SAT, ACT or CLT score, and UT says automatic admission is restricted for Cockrell majors. For fall 2027 entry, Early Action closed October 15, 2026; the remaining deadline is December 1, 2026, with materials due December 10. To plan a UT Austin engineering application, schedule a consultation with Oriel Admissions.

What is the UT Austin engineering acceptance rate?

We found no published applicant or admit figures for the Cockrell School of Engineering, so the only official rates are for the university as a whole. Its Common Data Set 2025-2026 reports the fall 2025 entering class, the Class of 2029.

A year earlier, for fall 2024, the Common Data Set 2024-2025 shows 19,417 of 72,885 applicants admitted (26.6%) and 2,332 of 23,015 out-of-state applicants admitted (10.1%), by our calculation. For fall 2026, the Class of 2030, UT reports that the freshman class “was selected from a record 98,841 applications” and that the first-time-in-college class is 9,487 students; the article does not give an admitted count (UT News, September 22, 2026).

UT lists the “Competitiveness of the major you applied to” among the items it reviews (UT Austin Admissions, review and decision process). In our view, the university rate should not be read as the engineering rate, and an out-of-state applicant to a heavily requested engineering major should treat UT Austin as a reach. Our UT Austin acceptance rate analysis and our guide to the UT Austin out-of-state acceptance rate cover these numbers in more detail.

How does automatic admission affect engineering applicants?

Texas law requires UT Austin to “automatically admit enough students to fill 75 percent of available” Texas resident spaces, and UT sets the class-rank threshold each year. Its review page lists “Summer/Fall 2027 and Spring 2028 applicants: Top 5%” (UT Austin Admissions, review and decision process). To qualify for automatic admission, students at Texas public high schools must also be pursuing or have completed the distinguished level of achievement (UT Austin Admissions, high school prerequisites).

UT’s Aerospace Engineering department states: “Admission to all majors in the Cockrell School of Engineering is competitive and automatic admission for eligible Texas applicants is restricted” (UT Austin Aerospace Engineering, undergraduate admissions). UT’s FAQ says applicants are considered for their first-choice major during holistic review, and that “You may be considered for your second-choice major if you qualify for automatic admission” and are not admitted to the first choice (UT Austin Admissions FAQ). In our view, a top 5% Texas student who wants engineering should still build the application around the engineering major and meet every Cockrell requirement.

How do you apply to the Cockrell School of Engineering?

Applicants choose an engineering major as their first-choice major on the university application. Cockrell offers freshman admission for the summer or fall only, with no spring admission (Cockrell School, undergraduate admissions). Cockrell reports 6,097 undergraduates in fall 2025, led by Electrical and Computer Engineering with 1,506 and Mechanical Engineering with 1,261 (Cockrell School, program enrollments).

In our view, internal transfer is not a dependable route into Cockrell. For students already at UT, Cockrell says of internal transfer: “Admission is competitive and based on space availability” (Cockrell School, internal transfer).

What is the UT Austin Calculus Readiness Requirement?

Every Cockrell major, along with computer science and several other majors, carries a Calculus Readiness Requirement (UT Austin Admissions, high school prerequisites). Cockrell lists the ways to meet it, including an “SAT Math score of 620 or above,” an “ACT Math score of 26 or above,” an “Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus AB or BC test score of 3 or higher,” an “International Baccalaureate (IB) HL Mathematics score of 4 or higher,” or a calculus course on a high school or college transcript completed “with a grade of B or higher” (Cockrell School, Calculus Readiness Requirement).

UT’s prerequisites page also accepts a Classical Learning Test (CLT) Math score of 26 or above (UT Austin Admissions, high school prerequisites). Timing matters, and UT’s pages differ: the admissions FAQ says that if a student will not have a final calculus grade or an AP or IB score by December 10, it “will not count for calculus readiness purposes” (UT Austin Admissions FAQ), while Cockrell says first-year applicants “must meet the Calculus Readiness Requirement by the December 1st admissions application deadline” (Cockrell School, undergraduate admissions). In our view, applicants should meet the requirement by December 1, most simply through the SAT, ACT or CLT math score.

When are the UT Austin deadlines for fall 2027?

DeadlineApply byMaterials byDecision
Early Action (closed)October 15, 2026October 22, 2026Decision or deferral by January 15, 2027
Regular deadlineDecember 1, 2026December 10, 2026By February 15, 2027
Source: UT Austin Admissions, freshman page and FAQ, read October 26, 2026. The freshman page lists month and day; the FAQ gives the 2027 decision dates.

The October 15 Early Action deadline for fall 2027 has passed, so applicants applying now use the December 1 deadline. UT states that “The Early Action deadline does not provide an advantage in the review process nor is it binding.” Early Action applicants must select Early Action on the application, and deferred applicants receive a final decision with the regular round (UT Austin Admissions FAQ). Cockrell’s own admissions page lists December 1 as its application deadline (Cockrell School, undergraduate admissions). In our view, the main benefit of Early Action is an earlier answer, not better odds.

Does UT Austin require the SAT or ACT for engineering?

Yes. UT asks applicants to “Send at least one official SAT or ACT score directly from the testing agency,” and adds that “Official Classic Learning Test (CLT) scores sent from the testing agency will satisfy this requirement” (UT Austin Admissions, freshman page). UT does not superscore; its FAQ answers the superscoring question, “No, we use the highest score from one test date” (UT Austin Admissions FAQ).

In our view, an engineering applicant should plan a math score well above the 620 SAT or 26 ACT calculus readiness floor, since that floor shows readiness for the major rather than a competitive score.

What does UT Austin look for in engineering applicants?

UT says it “uses an individualized, holistic review process to consider each completed application.” Its list of items reviewed includes class rank, “Strength of academic background,” test scores, achievements and awards, work and service, essays, “Recommendations (although not required)” and the “Competitiveness of the major you applied to” (UT Austin Admissions, review and decision process). UT states that it does not offer interviews for general admission and does not use demonstrated interest in its review (UT Austin Admissions FAQ).

Applicants submit one essay of 500 to 650 words, which the Common App personal essay satisfies, and two required short answers. The first asks, “Why are you interested in the major you indicated as your first-choice major?” The second asks which activity a student is most proud of and why (UT Austin Admissions, essays and short answers). Students may also send a resume and up to two letters of recommendation (UT Austin Admissions, freshman page). Engineering Honors requires no additional essays, though UT recommends a resume (UT Austin Admissions, honors programs).

In our experience, the first-choice major short answer is where an engineering applicant makes the case for the major, and it reads best when it names specific coursework, projects or problems the student has already worked on.

How does financial aid work for UT Austin engineering students?

Under the Texas Advance Commitment, Texas residents enrolled full time and pursuing a first bachelor’s degree, with demonstrated financial need and a family adjusted gross income up to $100,000, receive support to cover tuition, and those between $100,000 and $125,000 receive tuition support. The award applies to tuition only, and there is no separate application; students file the FAFSA or TASFA (UT Austin Admissions, Texas Advance Commitment).

UT says that “Every admitted freshman is considered for some University-wide general scholarships as well as college and school awards,” but students must complete the Scholarship Interest Form by January 15 to signal interest in institutional scholarships, and January 15 is also the state priority deadline for the FAFSA or TASFA (UT Austin Admissions, financial aid). Our guide to whether an out-of-state flagship is worth it covers the cost question for families outside Texas.

What does the UT Austin engineering acceptance rate mean for applicants?

In the view of Oriel Admissions, UT Austin engineering is a reach for most out-of-state applicants, given the 7.5% out-of-state rate for the whole university in fall 2025, and a competitive target, often a reach, for Texas applicants outside the automatic admission range, since the 35.9% Texas rate includes automatic admits. The pieces an applicant can control include meeting calculus readiness by December 1, sending a strong test score and making a specific case for the first-choice major.
