Oxford Said MSc in Financial Economics

By Rona Aydin

How to Approach the Personal Statement for the MSc in Financial Economics

The personal statement prompt for the MSc in Financial Economics is a classic career-oriented essay, and applicants should approach it with both reflection and strategy. The prompt reads: “How do you hope to see your career developing over the next five years? How will the MSc in Financial Economics assist you in the development of these ambitions?” (500 words)

This prompt has two distinct parts that should be addressed evenly. A strong essay will dedicate roughly half the word count to each, creating a narrative that is both forward-looking and grounded in research.

Part 1: Career Vision: Where Do You Hope to Go?

The word hope stands out in this prompt. It invites you to reflect on your ideal trajectory, not just a likely next step, but what you genuinely aspire to accomplish. Ask yourself:

  • What kind of work excites you?
  • What problems do you want to solve?
  • Where do you see yourself contributing meaningfully within five years?

The admissions committee is not looking for a rigid five-year plan, but they do want to see clarity of purpose. Whether you hope to work in asset management, macroeconomic policy, private equity, or another field, your goals should reflect both ambition and realism. More importantly, your career aspirations must connect logically to the skills and training offered by the MSc in Financial Economics.

You should also demonstrate an understanding of what growth looks like in your chosen path. For example, what might a promotion or a lateral move into a more challenging role involve? How will you grow professionally and intellectually in your first years post-graduation?

Having direction signals maturity and determination, two qualities that Oxford, and particularly the Saïd Business School, values highly.

Part 2: Why This MSc And Why Now?

Once you have articulated your career goals, the second part of the essay should focus on how the MSc in Financial Economics will help you achieve them. This is your opportunity to show that you have done your research and understand what makes the program distinctive.

Go beyond listing course titles. Instead, explain how specific features of the curriculum, such as the integration of economics and finance, hands-on quantitative training, or exposure to leading practitioners, will allow you to build the competencies you need. If you aim to work in risk management, for example, discuss how the program’s emphasis on financial modeling and econometrics aligns with that goal.

You might also reference the broader Oxford ecosystem, the intellectual community, the college experience, or access to recruiting opportunities, and connect these resources to your professional development.

The essay should ultimately convey that you are well-prepared to take full advantage of the program’s intensive structure. As a one-year degree, the MSc in Financial Economics moves quickly. Applicants who can demonstrate readiness and purpose will stand out.
