Yale GPA Requirements: What Yale Publishes About Grades, Rank and Testing

By Rona Aydin

Teacher grading student test paper with A grade for Yale GPA requirements article
TL;DR: Yale publishes no minimum GPA and no required high school courses, and it says that “The single most important document in your application is your high school transcript”. Its Common Data Set reports no GPA figures, but 97% of first-years who entered in fall 2025 and had a class rank were in the top tenth of their class, and Yale’s profile of the class that entered in fall 2026 reports 96%. Yale gives a 4.4% admission rate for that class. For fall 2027 entry, Yale requires the SAT or ACT, and Single-Choice Early Action applications are due November 1, 2026. To plan a Yale application, schedule a consultation with Oriel Admissions.

Does Yale have a minimum GPA?

None of the Yale admissions pages we read sets a minimum GPA, and Yale says it “does not prescribe a set of secondary school courses that are required for admission” (Yale, course selection). What Yale does say is that academics come first: “Yale is, above all, an academic institution. This means academic strength is our first consideration in evaluating any candidate.” It calls the transcript the single most important document in the application and looks “for students who have consistently taken a broad range of challenging courses in high school and have done well” (What Yale Looks For).

What grades and class ranks do Yale students have?

Yale leaves the GPA items of its Common Data Set (CDS) blank: there are no GPA bands (item C11) and no average GPA (item C12) (Yale CDS 2025-2026). Class rank is the closest official measure.

In our view, the rank figures and Yale’s own guidance point the same way: admitted students are usually at the top of their school, measured against the courses that school offers. Our guide to the Yale acceptance rate covers the admission numbers by year.

How does Yale read a GPA?

Yale says that grades and test scores “are always interpreted by a real person and are never fed into a formula or an algorithm,” and that its admissions officers “do not, for example, unweight or reweight grade point averages” (What Yale Looks For). It reads each transcript against the school that produced it: “We know you did not design your school’s curriculum, and we only expect you to take advantage of such courses if your high school provides them.” Yale says it seeks “to understand every applicant’s transcript within its unique context, incorporating insights from secondary school reports, school profiles, public data, and letters of recommendation” (Yale, course selection).

In our reading, that means a weighted 4.5 from one school and an unweighted 3.9 from another are not converted to a common number. In our experience, the school profile sent by the counselor, which explains the grading scale and the courses on offer, matters a great deal for this kind of reading.

How does Yale weigh grades against other factors?

Factor (CDS item C7)How Yale rates it
Rigor of secondary school recordVery important
Class rankVery important
Academic GPAVery important
Standardized test scoresConsidered
Application essayVery important
RecommendationsVery important
Source: Yale CDS 2025-2026, item C7, which covers decisions on the class that entered in fall 2025. Only the academic factors are shown here.

Yale rates rigor, rank and GPA very important and test scores considered. The fall 2025 class applied under Yale’s earlier test-flexible policy, which in our view may explain the rating. The CDS ratings show what a college says it weighs, not how any single file is read.

Which high school courses does Yale recommend?

Yale names no required courses. Its course selection page says the committee “will not focus on whether you have taken any specific course” and “will be far more interested to see that you have consistently challenged yourself with difficult coursework across a range of subjects, and have done well.” It suggests that students ask themselves whether they are taking a well-balanced program and whether they are “prepared to take rigorous college-level math, writing, and science courses” (Yale, course selection). Our guide to how many AP classes Yale applicants take covers course rigor in more detail.

What test scores do Yale students have, and is testing required for fall 2027?

Yes. Yale says that “First-year and transfer applicants are required to include scores from the ACT or SAT” (Yale standardized testing). That replaced Yale’s test-flexible policy, under which applicants could use AP or IB results instead; Yale announced the change on May 27, 2026 (Yale News, May 27, 2026).

Sources: each college’s Common Data Set (CDS) 2025-2026, items C1, C10, C11 and C12, for first-year students who entered in fall 2025 (the Class of 2029); Cornell’s fall 2025 rate (6,077 of 72,523) is from its University Factbook. Class of 2030 rates come from each college’s latest release: Harvard admissions statistics, the Yale College Class Profile, Fall 2026 (rate as Yale states it), the Princeton profile (as of August 18, 2026), the Columbia Class of 2030 Profile (as of August 22, 2026), Brown admission numbers (rate as Brown states it), Dartmouth News, March 30, 2026 and the Cornell factbook. Brown’s two rates use different applicant counts (42,774 in its CDS and 47,944 on its admission numbers page), so they are not directly comparable. Penn and Stanford have not posted Class of 2030 admit counts, and MIT’s statistics page still showed the Class of 2029 on October 27, 2026. Other rates are by our calculation. Harvard says its admit count includes students admitted from the waiting list (103 for the Class of 2030), and CDS admit counts can include them too, while Dartmouth’s rate comes from its March announcement. The averages are not on a common scale: Columbia’s C11 and C12 cover the 72.2% of enrolled students whose GPA was recorded on a 4.0 scale, and averages above 4.0 suggest that some weighted values are included. Brown says it does not collect GPA. Class rank covers only students whose schools rank: about 12% of the class at Cornell, 23% to 31% at Penn, Stanford, Harvard, Columbia, Brown, Yale and MIT, and 44% at Dartmouth.

Yale reports class rank but no GPA figures, like Dartmouth, Cornell and MIT, and Brown does not collect GPA. The 4.4% rate for the Class of 2030 is the figure in Yale’s class profile; in March, at decision time, Yale News reported 2,328 admits from 54,919 applicants, 4.2% by our calculation, while the profile counts 54,956 applicants (Yale News, March 26, 2026). Our guide to Harvard GPA requirements shows a full set of GPA bands for comparison.

Can you get into Yale with a GPA below 3.75?

Yale publishes no GPA distribution, so there is no official share of students below any GPA, and Yale does not convert GPAs to a common scale. The view of Oriel Admissions is that a student with a lower GPA should treat Yale as a reach, take the most demanding courses the school offers, and make sure the counselor letter and school profile explain the grading context. Our guide on whether a 3.7 GPA is good enough for the Ivy League uses the GPA bands that other colleges publish.

Should a student apply early to Yale?

Yale offers Single-Choice Early Action, which is nonbinding. Applications are due November 1 with decisions in mid-December, and regular decision applications are due January 2 (Yale application timelines); for fall 2027 entry, that is November 1, 2026 and January 2, 2027. Early applicants may not apply early action or early decision elsewhere, with exceptions Yale lists for nonbinding early programs at public institutions, plans that notify after January 1, institutions outside the United States and nonbinding rolling admission. For the Class of 2030, Yale admitted 779 of 7,140 early applicants, 10.9% by our calculation (Yale News, December 17, 2025). In our view, that rate reflects a strong self-selected pool, so it does not measure how much applying early helps any one student. Our guide to the Yale early action acceptance rate covers the trend.
