Cornell GPA Requirements: Class Rank, College Course Rules and Testing

By Rona Aydin

TL;DR: Cornell’s Common Data Set reports no GPA figures, and we found no minimum GPA in its admissions materials. Of first-years who entered in fall 2025 and had a class rank, 84% were in the top tenth, but only 12.2% of the class submitted a rank. Cornell admitted 6,040 of 65,514 applicants to the Class of 2030, 9.2% by our calculation, and applicants choose one of eight undergraduate colleges and schools, several with their own course requirements. Cornell requires the SAT or ACT, and for fall 2027 entry binding Early Decision applications were due November 1, 2026. To plan a Cornell application, schedule a consultation with Oriel Admissions.

Does Cornell have a minimum GPA?

We found no minimum GPA on Cornell’s admissions pages, and Cornell does not publish GPA data. In its Common Data Set (CDS) for 2025-26, a standardized report many colleges publish each year, the GPA bands (item C11) and the average GPA (item C12) are left blank (Cornell CDS 2025-2026). For tests, Cornell says: “There is no minimum score for Cornell’s application process, nor any score that will guarantee any admissions decision” (Cornell admissions FAQ, test scores).

What grades and class ranks do Cornell students have?

Measure (fall 2025 entrants)Value
Top tenth of high school class, students with a rank84%
Top quarter, same students97%
Top half, same students99.6%
Share of the class whose school reported a rank12.2%

Source: Cornell Common Data Set 2025-2026, items C10 and C12, for first-time, first-year students who entered in fall 2025 (the Class of 2029).

Only about one student in eight came from a school that reported a rank, so in our view the 84% figure describes a small part of the class and should not be read as a profile of everyone. It is lower than the top-tenth figures at the other colleges in our comparison below, which may reflect who has a reported rank as much as the students themselves. Our guide on how to get into Cornell covers the full admission picture.

How does Cornell weigh grades against other factors?

Factor (CDS item C7)How Cornell rates it
Rigor of secondary school recordVery important
Class rankImportant
Academic GPAImportant
Standardized test scoresConsidered
Application essayVery important
RecommendationsVery important
Extracurricular activitiesVery important
Talent or abilityVery important
Character and personal qualitiesVery important
InterviewConsidered
Source: Cornell CDS 2025-2026, item C7, which covers decisions on the class that entered in fall 2025. The fall 2025 class applied before Cornell required testing again.

Cornell rates the rigor of the record very important and academic GPA important. Among the colleges in our comparison whose ratings we could read (Princeton’s could not be read), only Cornell and MIT rate academic GPA important rather than very important, and Harvard rates it considered. In our reading, rigor carries at least as much weight as the GPA figure itself at Cornell. The CDS ratings show what a college says it weighs, not how any single file is read.

Which high school courses do Cornell colleges require?

Applicants apply to one of Cornell’s eight undergraduate colleges and schools, and several publish their own course requirements on their applicant pages. Examples, in each college’s own words where quoted:

College or schoolCourse expectations
Duffield College of Engineering“4 units of mathematics, including one of calculus”, “1 unit of physics”, “1 unit of chemistry”
College of Agriculture and Life SciencesPre-calculus required; “Biology and chemistry are required; physics is strongly recommended”; calculus or physics required for some majors
College of Arts and SciencesThree units of one foreign language
SC Johnson College of Business, Dyson School“Calculus is required if offered at your school.” plus one unit each of chemistry and biology
SC Johnson College of Business, Nolan School“Pre-calculus is required.” plus three units of a foreign language
College of Human EcologyChemistry required for several majors, including Nutritional Sciences and pre-health study
Sources: Cornell college and school applicant pages, read October 26, 2026. Check the page for your intended college before applying, because requirements differ by major.

Our guide to how many AP classes Cornell applicants take covers course rigor in more detail.

Does the Cornell college you choose change the GPA you need?

We found no admit rates or grade profiles by college in Cornell’s CDS or its University Factbook, so there is no official GPA figure for any single college. Cornell warns: “Students applying to a particular Cornell college or school solely on the basis of its acceptance rate may find that the selection process works against them” (Cornell admissions FAQ, choosing a college). In our view, the course requirements above are the clearest signal of what each college expects, and the right choice is the college whose majors fit the student, not one picked for perceived odds.

What test scores do Cornell students have, and is testing required for fall 2027?

Yes. Cornell says “First-year applicants are required to submit SAT or ACT scores when applying to Cornell,” and its FAQ says the requirement covers applicants to all Cornell undergraduate colleges and schools (Cornell admissions FAQ, SAT or ACT). “For the SAT, Cornell considers the highest section scores across test dates,” and for the ACT it considers the ACT superscore and the highest section scores (Cornell standardized testing policy). The fall 2025 class applied in a test optional cycle, so its CDS ranges describe only the students who chose to submit.

Test (fall 2025 entering class)Middle 50%Share who submitted
SAT total1490 to 155043%
ACT composite33 to 3513%
Source: Cornell CDS 2025-2026, item C9. The SAT median was 1530.

Sources: each college’s Common Data Set (CDS) 2025-2026, items C1, C10, C11 and C12, for first-year students who entered in fall 2025 (the Class of 2029); Cornell’s fall 2025 rate (6,077 of 72,523) is from its University Factbook. Class of 2030 rates come from each college’s latest release: Harvard admissions statistics, the Yale College Class Profile, Fall 2026 (rate as Yale states it), the Princeton profile (as of August 18, 2026), the Columbia Class of 2030 Profile (as of August 22, 2026), Brown admission numbers (rate as Brown states it), Dartmouth News, March 30, 2026 and the Cornell factbook. Brown’s two rates use different applicant counts (42,774 in its CDS and 47,944 on its admission numbers page), so they are not directly comparable. Stanford has not posted a Class of 2030 admit count, and MIT’s statistics page still showed the Class of 2029 on October 27, 2026. Penn has posted applications but not admits; its figure uses the 3,575 admits its dean reported to the trustees, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. Other rates are by our calculation. Harvard says its admit count includes students admitted from the waiting list (103 for the Class of 2030), and CDS admit counts can include them too, while Dartmouth’s rate comes from its March announcement. The averages are not on a common scale: Columbia’s C11 and C12 cover the 72.2% of enrolled students whose GPA was recorded on a 4.0 scale, and averages above 4.0 suggest that some weighted values are included. Brown says it does not collect GPA. Class rank covers only students whose schools rank: about 12% of the class at Cornell, 23% to 31% at Penn, Stanford, Harvard, Columbia, Brown, Yale and MIT, and 44% at Dartmouth.

Cornell has the highest admit rate in the table and the smallest share of students with a reported class rank. Like Yale, Dartmouth and MIT, it reports no GPA figures, and Brown does not collect GPA. Our analysis of Cornell Early Decision by college covers how the colleges differ.

Can you get into Cornell with a GPA below 3.75?

Cornell publishes no GPA distribution, so there is no official share of students below any GPA. The view of Oriel Admissions is that a student with a lower GPA should treat Cornell as a reach, meet every course requirement of the chosen college, and show strength in the subjects closest to the intended major, with the counselor letter and school profile explaining the grading context. Our guide on whether a 3.7 GPA is good enough for the Ivy League uses the GPA bands that other colleges publish.

Does applying Early Decision help at Cornell?

Cornell’s binding Early Decision applications are due November 1, with other required materials due November 13 and decisions in mid-December; Regular Decision applications are due January 2, with decisions in late March (Cornell first-year applicants). For fall 2027 entry, that means November 1, 2026, now passed, and January 2, 2027. Cornell encourages Early Decision applicants to send grades from the first grading period of senior year. For the Class of 2030, its factbook shows 1,653 of 7,919 Early Decision applicants admitted (20.9%), against 4,387 of 57,595 in its Regular Decision row (7.6%), by our calculation (Cornell University Factbook). Students denied in Early Decision “are not eligible to apply again under regular decision, nor can students apply to another Cornell college or school,” while students postponed to Regular Decision are released from the binding commitment (Cornell admissions FAQ, Early Decision). In our view, the gap between the two rates overstates the advantage for any one student, because early applicants are a self-selected group.
