Masters in Management vs MBA: Cost, Experience and Pay at the Same Schools

By Rona Aydin

TL;DR: In the Financial Times Masters in Management 2026 ranking, 79 of the 100 ranked programs are in Europe and two are in the United States. The masters in management vs MBA choice is mostly a question of timing: a masters in management admits you within about two years of your undergraduate degree, while the MBA classes at the same schools average five to six years of work experience. Tuition is close to half: £52,950 against £123,950 at London Business School, and €57,870 against €109,860 at INSEAD. Three years after graduation, the FT reports weighted salaries of about US$120,000 for the masters in management at INSEAD, London Business School and IESE, and about US$197,000 to US$218,000 for their MBAs (Sources: Financial Times Masters in Management 2026 and Global MBA Ranking 2026; the program pages of each school). If you are deciding between applying now and waiting, Oriel Admissions can map both routes with you: schedule a consultation.

What Is the Difference Between a Masters in Management and an MBA?

A masters in management, often shortened to MiM, is a pre-experience degree. Schools design it for people who have just finished an undergraduate degree and have little or no full-time work behind them. An MBA is a post-experience degree. The class is built from people who have already worked for several years and want to change direction or move up.

The two degrees cover much of the same core material: accounting, finance, marketing, operations and strategy. What differs is who sits in the room, what the degree costs and which jobs recruiters offer at the end. The clearest way to see the masters in management vs MBA difference is to compare both degrees at the same school. The table uses the tuition each school publishes for the most recent intake it lists.

SchoolMasters in management lengthMasters in management tuitionMBA lengthMBA tuition
London Business School12 to 16 months£52,95015 to 21 months£123,950
INSEAD14 months€57,870One year€109,860
HEC ParisTwo academic years€58,97016 months€102,000
IESE11 months€55,50015 or 19 months€117,000
Duke Fuqua10 monthsUS$69,900Two yearsUS$83,700 for the first year

Two details in the table are easy to miss. HEC Paris adds €2,500 to its masters in management tuition for students from outside the European Union and the countries associated with the Erasmus+ scheme. And INSEAD is the unusual case: its masters in management, at 14 months, is longer than its one year MBA.

Why Is the Masters in Management Mostly a European Degree?

The Financial Times Masters in Management 2026 ranking, published on September 7, 2026, lists 100 programs. By primary campus, 79 are in Europe: 23 in France, nine in the UK and eight in Germany, with the rest spread across 16 other countries. India has 14. The United States has two, Hult International Business School at 48th and Georgetown McDonough at 92nd. The University of St Gallen is first, followed by Nova School of Business and Economics, Shanghai Jiao Tong Antai, INSEAD and HEC Paris. IESE is eighth, London Business School 16th and IE Business School 23rd.

The reason is structural. In much of continental Europe a masters degree is the normal last step of a university education, and employers recruit from it for graduate roles. In the United States the undergraduate degree fills that role, so the pre-experience business masters has stayed a smaller product.

You can see the difference in class sizes. The London Business School MiM2026 class has 299 students from 65 nationalities, and the INSEAD Class of 2028 has 296 students from 54 nationalities. Among US programs, the Duke Fuqua Master of Management Studies Class of 2027 has 199 students. The Michigan Ross Master of Management Class of 2027 has 90 students, 90% of them from the United States, and the program is designed for graduates without a business degree: Michigan Ross states that applicants who hold one are generally not eligible.

How Much Work Experience Does Each Degree Expect?

This is the question that usually settles the masters in management vs MBA decision, because the two eligibility windows barely overlap.

ProgramDegreeExperience rule or class average
London Business School MiMMasters in managementGraduated within the last two years, with at most two years of work after graduation
HEC Paris Master in ManagementMasters in managementLittle to no professional experience by the start of the program
INSEAD MIMMasters in managementNo full-time experience required; class averages 11 months including internships; average age 23
IESE MiMMasters in management0 to 2 years of full-time experience; average age 23
Duke Fuqua MMSMasters in managementClass averages 14 months; average age 22
Michigan Ross MMMasters in managementThree or fewer years of full-time work after the undergraduate degree
London Business School MBAMBAClass averages 5.5 years
INSEAD MBAMBA3 to 8 years; average age 29
HEC Paris MBAMBAClass averages 6 years; average age 30
IESE MBAMBAClass averages 5.4 years; average age 29
Duke Fuqua Daytime MBAMBAClass averages 6.0 years; average age 29

Read the rules closely, because they are stricter than they look. London Business School counts only work done after graduation toward its two year limit, and states that internships taken during your degree do not count, even if you have completed several. That helps you if you are a senior with a full internship record. It works against you if you graduated three years ago: at that point the masters in management is closed and the MBA is the degree schools expect you to apply for.

If you are still in college and already know you want an MBA from a US school, there is a third route. Several US schools run deferred MBA programs that admit college seniors and hold the seat while you work.

How Do Masters in Management vs MBA Salaries Compare?

The Financial Times publishes a weighted salary for each ranked program, measured three years after graduation. Five schools appear in both the Masters in Management 2026 table and the Global MBA Ranking 2026.

SchoolMasters in management weighted salary (US$)MBA weighted salary (US$)
INSEAD120,995217,822
HEC Paris137,760200,984
London Business School119,990217,389
IESE119,465196,560
IE Business School94,456176,305

The gap is real, but it is not a like for like comparison. Three years after the degree, a masters in management graduate has about three years of work experience. An MBA graduate from the same school has the five or six years they brought into the program plus three more. Most of the difference is experience, not the name of the degree.

On placement, the schools report strong numbers for both degrees. London Business School states that 92% of its masters in management graduates received an offer within three months of graduation. INSEAD reports that 93% of its masters in management class received a job offer. The roles are entry level: London Business School describes them as pre-experience roles and graduate schemes in industry, banks and consultancies.

Can You Do an MBA After a Masters in Management?

Yes, and some schools have built a shorter MBA for exactly this candidate. The London Business School One-year MBA runs 11 months and is open only to people who hold a masters in management or equivalent from an accredited school and have at least three years of work experience. Tuition for the 2026 intake is £77,950, and the 2026 class has 33 students. The arithmetic is worth doing: a London Business School MiM followed later by the One-year MBA comes to £130,900 in tuition at current prices, against £123,950 for the standard MBA alone.

IESE treats its masters in management as the first year of its two year MBA. Graduates who complete at least three years of work and pass the MBA admissions process can enter the second year and finish with a dual degree. Duke Fuqua runs an Accelerated Daytime MBA for holders of its Master of Management Studies, a masters in management from another accredited school or a similar degree. Tuition for the class entering in August 2026 is US$107,900. Our guide to one year MBA programs covers these accelerated routes in detail.

These routes are exceptions. At London Business School, a masters in management graduate who wants the standard MBA applies like any other candidate and receives no exemption from coursework. If you plan to apply to a two year US program later, expect to explain why you need a second general management degree.

How Do the Applications Differ?

Both degrees ask for the GMAT or GRE. London Business School sets no minimum for its masters in management and recommends a GMAT score of 555 or above on the current scale. Duke Fuqua reports a middle 80% range of 525 to 695 for its Class of 2027. Our GMAT prep guide covers how to plan the test.

The rest of the file is lighter than an MBA application and asks different questions. London Business School, HEC Paris and IESE each ask for one reference; INSEAD asks for two. HEC Paris interviews admissible candidates for 30 minutes on Zoom. INSEAD uses a recorded video assessment followed by an interview with an alum. Because you have little work history, the essays ask about motivation, activities and choices: INSEAD asks what you have been doing since secondary school and what motivated your choices, in 200 words. An MBA application asks you to argue from a work record, which is the subject of our guide to the core pillars of an MBA application. For one school in detail, see our guide to the London Business School Masters in Management essays.

ProgramApplication rounds for 2027 entry
HEC Paris Master in ManagementOctober 7 and November 26, 2026; February 17 and April 28, 2027
INSEAD MIMOctober 6 and December 8, 2026; February 23 and April 27, 2027
IESE MiMEight monthly rounds from October 2, 2026 to June 4, 2027
Duke Fuqua MMSOctober 7, 2026; January 13, March 4 and April 13, 2027
Michigan Ross MMSix rounds from September 11, 2026 to May 14, 2027

If you will need a visa, the late rounds are not really open to you. IESE states that candidates without an EU passport must apply before May 1. Duke Fuqua advises international applicants to apply in its first or second round. Michigan Ross sets January 4, 2027 as the final deadline for international applicants who are not already on a student visa in the United States.

Which Should You Choose: Masters in Management vs MBA?

Start with where you are. If you are a senior or within two years of graduating, and you want a business role now, the masters in management is the degree built for you. It is strongest for a graduate whose undergraduate degree was not in business and who wants access to consulting, banking or corporate graduate recruiting. If finance is the goal, compare the specialist route in our guide to masters in finance vs MBA. In London, LSE masters programs include a 12 month Masters in Management that drew 1,125 applications for 75 places.

Then ask where you want to work. European programs recruit mainly into Europe: London Business School says nearly half of the roles its masters in management graduates took were in the UK. If you want to work in the United States, look at the US programs. Duke Fuqua notes that its Master of Management Studies is STEM designated, which can give international students in qualifying jobs up to 36 months of work authorization.

If you already have three or more years of experience, the MBA is the right application, and the question becomes which schools. Our guides to the best MBA programs in Europe, building an MBA school list, MBA acceptance rates at the M7 and one year MBA recruiting in the United States cover that decision. If your long term target is a top US MBA, you do not need a masters in management first. A strong first job and a clear record of responsibility will do more for that application than a second degree.

Three years after graduation, yes. In the Financial Times 2026 rankings, the weighted salary for INSEAD is 120,995 US dollars for the masters in management and 217,822 US dollars for the MBA. MBA graduates have five or six more years of work experience at that point, which explains most of the gap.

Are there masters in management programs in the United States?

Yes, but few. Only two US programs appear among the 100 in the Financial Times Masters in Management 2026 ranking. US options include the Duke Fuqua Master of Management Studies, with 199 students in the Class of 2027, and the Michigan Ross Master of Management, with 90.
