Virginia Tech Waitlist: Acceptance Rate, Timeline, and How to Respond (2027)

By Rona Aydin

Burruss Hall, Virginia Tech
TL;DR: Virginia Tech admitted 4,295 of the 13,380 students who accepted a place on its waitlist for fall 2025 entry, 32.1% by our calculation, after offering a place to 22,526 applicants (Common Data Set 2025-2026). Its admissions FAQ counts differently: 4,485 offers from the waitlist in 2025, 1,517 in 2024, none in 2023 and 2,458 in 2022. The list is unranked and runs by major. Virginia Tech asks waitlisted students to do one thing, select to remain through the Response to Waitlist form in the Applicant Portal, and says letters of recommendation, letters of continued interest and visits “will not affect our decision.” Final answers come by email “no later than July 1” (July 1, 2026 in the current FAQ text; the 2027 date was not yet posted on November 7, 2026), after admitted students reply by May 1. Deposit elsewhere by May 1, 2027. To plan the waitlist response and the May 1 decision, schedule a consultation with Oriel Admissions.

What does a waitlist offer mean at Virginia Tech?

At Virginia Tech a waitlist decision means the application was competitive and may still lead to an offer, but no offer has been made. The admissions page that explains each decision puts it this way: “This means your application was competitive, that there is a chance you may still be offered, but you have not yet been offered” (Virginia Tech Undergraduate Admissions, What Does My Admissions Decision Mean?). The Fall Waitlist FAQ gives the reason: “Since we have classroom capacity for only a set number of new students, many applicants do not receive offers of admission. An unranked waitlist is kept so that some applicants can be offered admission if spaces become available in the first-year class” (Virginia Tech Undergraduate Admissions, Fall Waitlist FAQ). The same page opens with the sentence a waitlisted student most wants to read: “Because of the strength of your application and supporting documentation, we felt that you deserved to be considered again should space become available.” Our guide to what waitlisted means in college admissions covers the mechanics shared across colleges; the Virginia Tech specifics follow.

Two features of the Virginia Tech list matter more than at many colleges. First, it is unranked: the FAQ says so, and Virginia Tech answers “No” to the Common Data Set question “Is your waiting list ranked?” for fall 2025 entry (Virginia Tech Common Data Set 2025-2026, C2). Second, it runs by major. The FAQ says “offering students from the waitlist depends on space by major,” and a waitlisted student cannot move to a less crowded one: “No, you are unable to change your major while on the waitlist. If space becomes available, we will re-review your application for the major that you selected when initially applying for admission” (Virginia Tech, Fall Waitlist FAQ). In our view this is why two students with similar records can have very different prospects on the same Virginia Tech list, and why the major chosen in January matters again in May. The admitted pool itself is covered in our Virginia Tech acceptance rate guide.

What is the Virginia Tech waitlist acceptance rate?

By our calculation, 32.1% of students who accepted a place on the Virginia Tech waitlist for fall 2025 entry were admitted: 4,295 of 13,380, from 22,526 offered a place (Common Data Set 2025-2026, C2). The figures come from the Excel workbook that Virginia Tech Analytics and Institutional Effectiveness publishes as its most recent Common Data Set, where the CDS-C sheet reads “Number of qualified applicants offered a place on waiting list:” 22,526, “Number accepting a place on the waiting list:” 13,380, and “Number of wait-listed students admitted:” 4,295 (Virginia Tech Common Data Set 2025-2026, sheet CDS-C, items C.201 to C.206). The same sheet reports 57,755 first-year applicants for fall 2025, so Virginia Tech offered a waitlist place to 39.0% of its applicant pool, by our calculation. Virginia Tech publishes no waitlist rate of its own, and it publishes no earlier Common Data Set online: the Common Data Set page links one file and says “For prior years’ data, please email aiesupport@vt.edu” (Virginia Tech Analytics and Institutional Effectiveness, Common Data Set). The fall 2024, 2023 and 2022 rows are therefore left blank rather than estimated.

Admit rate = admitted from the waitlist divided by the number accepting a place. Virginia Tech links one Common Data Set file and refers requests for prior years to aiesupport@vt.edu, so the earlier rows are not published online and are not estimated here.

Virginia Tech also publishes its own year-by-year history on the Fall Waitlist FAQ, and it counts something different. Under “What is Virginia Tech’s history of selecting students from the waitlist?” the FAQ says: “In 2025, we were able to offer 4,485 applicants from the waitlist. In 2024, we were able to offer 1,517 applicants from the waitlist. In 2023, we were unable to offer any applicants from the waitlist. In 2022, we were able to offer 2,458 applicants from the waitlist. In 2021, we were able to offer 3,286 applicants from the waitlist. In 2020 we were able to offer 3,961 applicants from the waitlist. In 2019 we were unable to make any offers” (Virginia Tech, Fall Waitlist FAQ). It adds that “the number of students ultimately receiving offers from the waitlist is highly unpredictable and varies each year.”

Source: Virginia Tech Undergraduate Admissions, Fall Waitlist FAQ, read November 7 and 8, 2026. These are offers of admission made from the waitlist, as reported by the admissions office; the FAQ does not give the number offered a place on the list or the number who accepted, so no rate can be computed from it.

The two tables do not match for 2025, and we have not reconciled them. The Common Data Set, prepared by Analytics and Institutional Effectiveness, reports 4,295 “wait-listed students admitted” for fall 2025 entry; the admissions FAQ reports 4,485 “applicants” offered from the waitlist in 2025. They are produced by different offices, may be counted on different dates, and may apply different definitions, so each figure is given with its own source and neither is adjusted. Neither figure is an enrollment count: Virginia Tech does not say how many students admitted from the waitlist chose to enroll. The year labels also differ in kind: the Common Data Set names the entry term, while the FAQ gives a calendar year without saying whether it refers to the admission cycle or the entering class. Our comparison of waitlist rates at top schools puts the Common Data Set figure beside other colleges, and our Virginia Tech out-of-state acceptance rate guide breaks down the fall 2025 applicant pool by residency.

When does Virginia Tech release waitlist decisions?

Virginia Tech commits to a deadline, not a date, and the deadline is July 1. The Fall Waitlist FAQ says: “If you select to remain on the waitlist, you will be notified by email of your final admission status. You will be notified no later than July 1, 2026, but we make every effort to notify applicants on the waitlist of their final decision as soon as we are able” (Virginia Tech, Fall Waitlist FAQ). That is last cycle’s wording: the page carried the heading “First-Year Waitlist 2026: FAQ” when we read it on November 7, 2026, and Virginia Tech had not yet posted the 2027 version, so a student waitlisted in March 2027 should expect a July 1, 2027 deadline but confirm it on the updated page. The FAQ also explains why nothing happens before the reply date: “We cannot make a final decision until all the responses from applicants offered admission are returned. Therefore, we cannot answer questions about your chances of being selected for admission at this time.” It then gives the arithmetic for the 2026 cycle: “This year Virginia Tech received more than 58,000 applications and we expect 7,251 students to accept our offer and enroll. If we have fewer than 7,251 students accept our offer, we will offer admission to some of the students who chose to remain on our waitlist.”

The surrounding calendar is on the Dates and Deadlines page for 2026-2027, marked “Information current as of July 2026” (Virginia Tech, Dates and Deadlines for 2026-2027). Early Action applications are due November 15, 2026, with decisions “Late-February”; Regular Decision applications are due January 15, 2027, with decisions “Mid-March.” Both plans carry the same reply date: “Deadline for acceptance of an Early Action offer of admission: May 1” and “Deadline for acceptance of an Regular Decision offer of admission: May 1.” The Accepting the Offer page repeats it: “The deadline for Early Action and Regular Decision to accept is May 1” (Virginia Tech, Accepting the Offer). Virginia Tech publishes no deadline for the Response to Waitlist form itself. Release windows at other colleges are in our Regular Decision notification dates guide.

Sources: Virginia Tech, Dates and Deadlines for 2026-2027; Virginia Tech, Accepting the Offer; Virginia Tech, Fall Waitlist FAQ, read November 7 and 8, 2026. The dates page prints its dates without a year; the 2027 years are ours for the current cycle. The waitlist FAQ still carries 2026 dates and had not been updated for the 2027 cycle when read.

What does Virginia Tech ask waitlisted students to do?

One action, and one piece of advice. The action is to stay on the list through the portal: “We recommend that you elect to remain on the waitlist for Virginia Tech through the Response to Waitlist form in your Applicant Portal” (Virginia Tech, Fall Waitlist FAQ). Asked whether anything else helps, the FAQ answers with the same instruction and then closes the door: “Please access your Applicant Portal and select to remain on the waitlist through the Response to Waitlist form. Since offering students from the waitlist depends on space by major, letters of recommendation, letters of continued interest, or personal visits will not affect our decision. We will use the information we already have to make a decision if space becomes available.” The advice is to secure a place elsewhere: “You should also explore other options as many schools have a response deadline of May 1, 2026 in case we are unable to admit you from the waitlist for your chosen major.” For students applying this year that date is May 1, 2027.

Virginia Tech does not ask waitlisted students for new grades, new test scores or a mid-year report; the FAQ names none of them, and its statement that “We will use the information we already have” covers the whole file (Virginia Tech, Fall Waitlist FAQ). The one document it will want later is the final transcript, from any student who is admitted: the Admitted Students page says “Check your New Student Checklist for the date your final transcript is due” and warns that an offer can be withdrawn “If your final transcript(s) reveals that you have failed to complete the university’s minimum requirements for admission” (Virginia Tech, Admitted Students). A student who is not admitted from the list has a second route that Virginia Tech itself points out: “Each year, about 1,300 students transfer to Virginia Tech after beginning their college journey at other colleges and universities” (Virginia Tech, Fall Waitlist FAQ). In the experience of Oriel Admissions, families often assume that a college which refuses letters still reads them; at Virginia Tech the published policy ties offers to space by major and to the existing file, so the Response to Waitlist form is the whole of what a student can do. Our guide on how to get off a college waitlist explains how this differs from colleges that invite updates.

What should a waitlisted Virginia Tech student not send?

  • Do not send a letter of continued interest. Virginia Tech: “letters of recommendation, letters of continued interest, or personal visits will not affect our decision.”
  • Do not send additional recommendations. The same sentence names “letters of recommendation” among the items that will not affect the decision.
  • Do not schedule a visit to help your case. Virginia Tech lists “personal visits” in the same sentence.
  • Do not ask to switch to a different major. Virginia Tech: “No, you are unable to change your major while on the waitlist.”
  • Do not ask about your chances. Virginia Tech: “we cannot answer questions about your chances of being selected for admission at this time.”
  • Do not treat the list as a plan. Virginia Tech asks waitlisted students to “explore other options as many schools have a response deadline of May 1, 2026” (May 1, 2027 for this cycle), and its FAQ shows two recent years, 2019 and 2023, with no offers from the waitlist at all.

All quotations are from the Fall Waitlist FAQ, read November 7 and 8, 2026. Virginia Tech also publishes an appeal process for first-year decisions on its Application Policies page, but that page says “The appeals process is NOT a re-review process of the existing applicant file” and requires “NEW information that was not included in the initial application”; the waitlist FAQ does not mention appeals, and in our view a waitlisted student should not confuse the two.

How should a waitlisted student plan April to July 2027?

In our view the plan has four parts, and the first two follow Virginia Tech’s own words. First, submit the Response to Waitlist form in the Applicant Portal as soon as the decision arrives in mid-March 2027, and keep the confirmation; Virginia Tech publishes no deadline for the form, so there is no reason to wait. Second, accept another offer and pay that deposit by May 1, 2027, as the FAQ advises, because Virginia Tech cannot begin reviewing the list until the replies from admitted students are in and may not answer until July 1. Third, finish the year strongly: Virginia Tech says it will use the information it already has while you are on the list, but it will read the final transcript if you are admitted, and it can withdraw an offer on that basis. Fourth, do not write a letter of continued interest to Virginia Tech; the FAQ says plainly that one will not affect the decision, so the letter is not part of the process there, unlike at colleges that invite updates.

Three practical facts from Virginia Tech’s own pages belong in the family calendar. The enrollment deposit is $400, paid “through your Applicant Portal by the date on your offer letter,” and “If the $400 enrollment deposit is a burden to you or your family, please contact our office” about a reduction or waiver based on the FAFSA (Virginia Tech, Accepting the Offer). Refunds are tied to May 1: the Application Policies page says “Refunds are only available to first-year applicants who withdraw their enrollment deposit before May 1” (Virginia Tech, Application Policies), so a student admitted from the waitlist in June who pays the Virginia Tech deposit should treat it as final. Housing and aid are dated for students admitted in the regular rounds: “Your Housing and Dining contract is due by June 1” (Virginia Tech, Admitted Students) and the “FAFSA Priority deadline” is March 1 (Virginia Tech, Dates and Deadlines for 2026-2027). Virginia Tech publishes nothing specific about housing or financial aid for students admitted from the waitlist after those dates, so a family that depends on either should ask the admissions office in writing before accepting a summer offer. Our guide on whether being full pay helps on a waitlist covers the question families raise most in April, and our guides to the UVA waitlist and the Georgia Tech waitlist show how two neighboring engineering-heavy publics handle the same months.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Virginia Tech Waitlist

What is the Virginia Tech waitlist acceptance rate?

By our calculation, 32.1% of students who accepted a waitlist place for fall 2025 entry were admitted: 4,295 of 13,380, according to the Virginia Tech Common Data Set 2025-2026. Virginia Tech publishes no rate of its own and no earlier Common Data Set online, so earlier years cannot be calculated.

How many students does Virginia Tech put on its waitlist?

For fall 2025 entry Virginia Tech offered a waitlist place to 22,526 first-year applicants, 39.0% of its 57,755 applicants by our calculation, and 13,380 accepted the place, according to the Common Data Set 2025-2026. The admissions FAQ separately reports 4,485 offers of admission from the waitlist in 2025.

How many students does Virginia Tech admit from the waitlist each year?

The Fall Waitlist FAQ lists offers from the waitlist of 4,485 in 2025, 1,517 in 2024, none in 2023, 2,458 in 2022, 3,286 in 2021, 3,961 in 2020 and none in 2019, and says the number is highly unpredictable and varies each year. The Common Data Set gives 4,295 admitted from the waitlist for fall 2025 entry; the two counts come from different offices and are not reconciled here.

When does Virginia Tech release waitlist decisions?

Virginia Tech notifies waitlisted students by email of their final status no later than July 1, and says it tries to notify them sooner. The current FAQ text gives July 1, 2026; the 2027 version had not been posted as of November 7, 2026. Review begins after admitted students reply by May 1.

How do I stay on the Virginia Tech waitlist?

Select to remain on the waitlist through the Response to Waitlist form in your Applicant Portal. Virginia Tech recommends this step, publishes no deadline for it, and says it will notify by email those who select to remain.

Should I send a letter of continued interest to Virginia Tech?

No. Virginia Tech states that letters of recommendation, letters of continued interest, or personal visits will not affect its decision, because offers from the waitlist depend on space by major and on the information already in the file. Oriel Admissions treats the Response to Waitlist form as the one action that matters at Virginia Tech.

Is the Virginia Tech waitlist ranked?

No. The Fall Waitlist FAQ describes an unranked waitlist, and Virginia Tech answers No to the Common Data Set question Is your waiting list ranked? for fall 2025 entry. Offers depend on space in the major the student selected when applying, and the major cannot be changed while on the list.

Should I accept another college offer while on the Virginia Tech waitlist?

Yes. Virginia Tech tells waitlisted students to explore other options because many schools have a response deadline of May 1, and it cannot make waitlist decisions until replies from admitted students are returned. For students applying this year that deadline is May 1, 2027, and Virginia Tech may not answer until July 1.
