TL;DR: MIT was the top team at the 86th Putnam Competition in December 2025, followed by Chicago, Harvard, Stanford, and Caltech, according to the Mathematical Association of America. The best colleges for math go beyond contest results: they offer proof-based honors sequences, paid summer research, and a senior thesis. Stanford’s SURIM pays an $8,500 stipend for eight weeks of research, and every Princeton math major writes a senior thesis. Oriel Admissions compares 31 programs below. What Makes a College One of the Best Colleges for Math?

Every math major covers calculus, linear algebra, analysis, and abstract algebra. The best colleges for math majors differ in how fast strong students can move, how early they do original research, and whether they finish with a thesis. Five things matter most.

  • Proof-based honors sequences. Harvard’s Math 55, Chicago’s invitation-only Honors Analysis, and Michigan’s first-year honors sequence let advanced students start with rigorous proofs.
  • Paid summer research. MIT, Stanford, Columbia, Duke, Michigan, Williams, and Ohio State run summer research programs for undergraduates.
  • A senior thesis. Princeton requires a thesis of every math major, and Reed requires one of every graduate.
  • Directed reading. UCLA, Washington, and Maryland pair undergraduates with graduate student mentors for independent study.
  • Breadth of degrees. Many universities offer applied math, statistics, data science, actuarial science, and joint majors with computer science or economics.

Which Colleges Do Best on the Putnam Competition?

The William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition is the best-known undergraduate math contest in North America. At the 86th competition, held on December 6, 2025, the MAA “recognizes the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as the top team,” followed by the University of Chicago, Harvard, Stanford, and Caltech (Mathematical Association of America).

Four of the five Putnam Fellows, the top individual scorers, were from MIT, and one was from Chicago. Participation grew to 4,335 students from 488 institutions. Putnam results reflect a concentration of students who arrive with olympiad training, so they say more about a department’s strongest students than about the typical math major’s experience.

Which Colleges Offer Proof-Based Honors Math for First-Year Students?

Harvard’s Math 55 covers multivariable calculus and linear algebra in depth, and Harvard notes that “Mathematics 55 differs from Mathematics 25 in that the former assumes a very strong proof oriented mathematics background” (Harvard Mathematics). At Chicago, “A small number of students each year receive an invitation to enroll in MATH 20700 Honors Analysis in Rn I” (University of Chicago). Princeton lets students with strong backgrounds start at MAT 216 (Princeton Mathematics).

Among public universities, Michigan’s first-year honors sequence (MATH 295, 296, 395, and 396) gives a rigorous introduction to theoretical mathematics, and Minnesota’s Honors Mathematics begins with an honors calculus sequence and ends with an honors thesis.

Which Math Programs Offer Summer Research for Undergraduates?

At MIT’s SPUR program, “Students in the program work full time for six weeks on original individual or joint research projects” (MIT Mathematics). Stanford’s SURIM “is a paid, full-time, 8-week summer research program” with an $8,500 stipend (Stanford SURIM). Duke’s PRUV pays $3,500 for six weeks, and the research continues into a senior thesis (Duke Mathematics), and Michigan’s math REU pays a stipend of $5,600 for eight weeks of full-time research (University of Michigan).

Williams runs SMALL, a nine-week residential summer program that has enrolled more than 800 students since 1988 and that Williams calls one of the largest programs of its kind (Williams College). Columbia’s 10-week summer program pays $3,500 plus housing, Ohio State’s summer institute pays a $5,000 stipend, and Rutgers hosts the DIMACS summer REU.

Which Math Programs Require a Senior Thesis?

At Princeton, “The independent work in the senior year centers on writing a senior thesis” (Princeton Mathematics). At Reed, “every graduate of Reed College completes a thesis in their senior year” (Reed College). Harvey Mudd requires every math major to complete “a year-long senior capstone research experience,” either a thesis or a Clinic project for an industry sponsor (Harvey Mudd College).

Yale requires a senior thesis of applied math majors (Yale College Programs of Study), Pomona’s senior exercise is directed research that includes a thesis, and Carleton’s comps are usually group projects of 2 to 4 students that “typically run for at least two terms” (Carleton College). At Caltech, “Seniors are encouraged, but not required, to do a bachelor’s thesis” (Caltech), and Carnegie Mellon’s Honors Degree Program, which includes an honors thesis, “qualifies the student for an additional degree, the Master of Science in Mathematical Sciences” (Carnegie Mellon University).

Which Public Universities Are Best for Math?

Berkeley awards honors in mathematics for a 3.5 GPA in upper-division and graduate courses plus a senior thesis or two graduate courses, and UT Austin’s Mathematics Honors option requires an honors thesis. Illinois runs the Illinois Mathematics Lab, founded in fall 2011 as the Illinois Geometry Lab, where faculty lead small-group research projects every semester (University of Illinois). Wisconsin offers a Madison Experimental Mathematics Lab course and a 6-credit senior honors thesis.

Several public universities run directed reading programs that pair undergraduates with graduate student mentors. At Washington, “We typically have about 10 project pairs each quarter” (University of Washington), and UCLA and Maryland run similar programs. Georgia Tech offers five optional concentrations, including Mathematical Foundations in Data Science, and Penn State’s MASS program has run every fall since 1996.

Which Liberal Arts Colleges Are Best for Math?

Liberal arts colleges give math majors small classes and early research. Harvey Mudd’s capstone, Williams’s SMALL program, Carleton’s group comps, Pomona’s senior exercise, and Reed’s thesis all put undergraduates in charge of original work. Amherst requires a senior comprehensive exam of non-honors majors on multivariable calculus and linear algebra, and honors candidates present a thesis at the department colloquium. Our guide to liberal arts colleges versus research universities covers the trade-offs between the two settings.

How Many Students Major in Math?

Colleges awarded 26,212 bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and statistics in 2021-22, compared with 27,106 in 2020-21 and 27,227 in 2019-20, according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Department sizes vary widely: Rutgers reports that it “graduates about one hundred and fifty majors each year” (Rutgers University), while many liberal arts colleges graduate a few dozen.

What Can You Do With a Math Degree?

Mathematicians and statisticians earned a median of $105,720 in 2025, typically need a master’s degree, and are projected to grow 10 percent from 2025 to 2035, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Data scientists, who typically need a bachelor’s degree, earned a median of $120,230 in May 2025, with employment projected to grow 35 percent (BLS). Actuaries earned a median of $130,000 in May 2025, with growth of 9 percent projected (BLS).

Math graduates also go into software engineering, finance, economics, cryptography, teaching, and doctoral programs in mathematics, statistics, computer science, and physics.

How Do You Judge a Math Program Beyond the Rankings?

  • Check the honors sequence. Find out whether first-year students can start with proof-based courses.
  • Count research options. Summer programs, directed reading, and research labs show how early undergraduates do original work.
  • Read the thesis rules. Find out whether a thesis is required of everyone or only of honors students.
  • Compare degrees. Pure, applied, statistics, data science, and actuarial tracks suit different goals.
  • Look at graduate courses. Access to graduate courses matters for students headed to a doctorate.

What Do Admissions Officers Look for in a Math Applicant?

Math applicants are read for depth. Admissions officers look for the most advanced mathematics a student can reach, evidence of problem-solving beyond the classroom, and signs that a student enjoys proofs rather than only computation.

Oriel Admissions builds this record with students who start in 9th or 10th grade: a math sequence that reaches calculus or beyond, a competition track, and one proof-based summer program. Our guide to intended major strategy explains how that record fits a declared math major.
